Barrel fitting with duct tape
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:30:17 AM »
My newly acquired 22 Hornet barrel was a little loose on my frame. I read the barrel fitting instructions in the FAQ's and thought that there might be an easier way. I bought a roll of foil duct tape and cut a piece to fit the barrel underlug where it meets the hinge pin. I cleaned the underlug area with acetone so that the tape would adhere well, applied the tape and then assembled the barrel and frame. No more wiggle, it seems to have worked perfectly. I'll let y'all know how it wears as I use it.

I've used brass in an old H&R shotgun, it hammered out eventually, but it's easy to replace. The hornet has a SAAMI MAP of 43kcup, it will hammer out fairly fast compared to the 13-14kpsi of a shotgun.

I use the furnace tape to shim forend spacers, it work very well and the price is right!!

Give heavy duty reynolds wrap a try. Ive gotten 300 rds with my 223 barrel shimmed with it. Still tight. Plus it lets you know how thick ya gotta shim when ya do it permantly

I also had to shim my forend recently because the action was very loose when opened, but it was tight when locked up.  Just put a piece of Coke can between the wood and plastic.  It was soooo expensive, but then it was worth the cost.  I use Coke cans for lots of things including a primer catcher/diverter on my loading press.  Cuts easily with a pair of sissors and holds its shape too.

Quick....pop cans 'used' to be great targets when they were made of steel.  The current aluminum cans make it hard to tell if you have even hit the target.  Even my 22 LR will go through the can and it won't even wobble (unless it is full).

Now, if you want a good target, try a golf ball.  Gives a whole new meaning to "shooting golf".  I like to throw a ball out about 10-15 yards and see how far I can move it with successive shots.  Eventually it will move beyond my ability to hit it.

BTW this is a much more productive use of golf balls, in my opinion!!!

Fill the pop cans with water first, then there's no doubt about a hit!! I agree, shooting at golf balls is a lot more fun than knocking them around with a club, to me anyway, course if I could make money doing that, it'd make a difference!! ;D

Tried to talk our golf league guys into having a true "shotgun tee-off"
Your opponent tee's off, your allowed to shoot the ball as is leaves the tee.
No soap. No sense of humor

Used pill bottles/colored water @ 100 yds, to try our flat shooters, .223, 22-250, 225. .243, etc.
If all else fails, I can always shoot supper.

I was going to second or third golfballs.  I hate golf but buy the balls on clearance when I see them.  I hadn't thought about some paintball action........

The golf balls are kinda fun, I have a golf course literally across the road from the house I get the slices in my wheat field and bar ditch,  but what I found was a dead on hit with a 22-250 will suck the guts out of them and leave the hull. The paint balls sound like fun. I occasionally get the spray paint cans that wouldn't work from the local hardware store you talk about putting n a color show when you hit one of them. We paint 3/8 or 1/2 inch washers safety orange and the object is not to hit the washer. I have got to get out and have some fun.

I received my 308 bull barrel today and it was loose on both frames I own. I read through the barrel fitting FQA section. It took 3 pieces of a Pepsi can to get it to lock up tight with no wiggle. When I hold it up to the light there is the very slightest of light to be seen at the top between the barrel and the receiver. The barrel has no gap at the bottom at all. I took a piece of the Pepsi can and locked the gun up on it. Keeping it above the firing pin. It was hard to pull out. Does this mean everything is ok? The lock up is good also. I can not break it when I apply a good amount of force.

Dale, please read the barrel fitting info again, it takes you through the entire process. You shouldn't have any visible gap at the top of the barrel unless the barrel face isn't flat, if you do, the shim is likely too thick, properly fitted, the barrel will be tight to the standing breech, bottom and top when locked up. I wouldn't recommend using a pop can as a permanent shim, it's not stout enough to last long at 308 pressures, it will hammer out and the barrel will be loose again. Once you get the fit right, then you need to check latch engagement which is also covered in the barrel fitting info. ;)
