7-30 Waters In A Handi?

  Hello All,

  It seems to me that a 7-30 would be ideal in a Handi. It is a rimmed case and operates at mild to medium pressures and is best of all, a .284 caliber. Anyone have any ideas on this?

 Hello Richard, Welcome to the wonderful world of handi's & GBO  forums.
 I think the 7-30 Waters would be good idea. Bit it would be expensive to
 get one. Only way I know how to get one is take a 223 barrel rebore &
 recamber it. Thence get a 30-30 ejecter from Bownells.
 I had this done for a 25-35 Win. This cost about $700 by time I got it
 complete. w/ scope. But I got what I wanted. Good luck Marv.

Marv is correct. I think the only 7mm bore is the 7-08. The camber is already too big for a Waters case. A rebore job would be a way to go. There are people on this site that have done just that with other chamber sizes. It costs some where in the $300 range, the donor barrel would have to be bought on top of that. It takes a while for the gunsmith to get to it. I know that Quicktodo has had a few done. I think he has a barrel out to be made as a 6.5 mm bore right now. Do a search to find a lot more threads on this subject. Another way to go would be to have a custom barrel made up. I think there is one located in Indiana (Coyote Arms?) that does this for H&R barrels, but they are not cheap either.

Besides th 7mm-08, H&R also offers a 7mm bore in the 280 Remington and has offered the 7x57 and 7x64 Brenneke in the past, none of them are small enough to convert to 7-30.

The 6.5x55 I'm having done is on a Shilen match barrel, my gunsmith, Wayne York of Oregunsmithing is going to weld an underlug to the barrel from a donor barrel I sent him.

Another option for converion would be a barrel stubbing where the chamber and underlug of a donor barrel is threaded to accept a threaded barrel.

Any way you look at it, to get a caliber not offered by H&R is going cost $250 minimum for the conversion work, Wayne charges about $300 for a rebore, plus any ejector/chambering work.

As far as rimmed vs rimless, it's a moot point with current production as all are extractors which don't have the stuck case issues the ejector did, although with a properly cleaned and functioning ejector, they aren't a problem either. I've got a bunch of them, the only time I have a problem is if the load is too hot or the chamber/brass  is ontaminated with fouling or oil/solvent. Even my 280 Improved with too hot of loads doesn't stick brass. ;)

  Just about what I had figured, it would be nice though! This cartridge holds a certain fascination with me, sort of pushes my buttons! Oh well, my BC will suffice for awhile, after all there is nothing like shooting a piece of our historical background. I`ve been loading for 45-70 now since 1973 and still every time I light one off it just feels great! My shoulders are a little worse for the wear but that`s what reduced loads are for! I learned long ago that 24 grains of 2400 behind any lead bullet works nice!

The 45-70 in either a Handi or BC is a must have H&R, it's one of the most liked, if not THE most liked offerings from H&R, probably a toss up tween it and the 223/30-30/Hornet. That's why I have 2 Handis and a BC in 45-70, plus a 45-120 BC, it don't get no better than having a 45-70, unless having more than one is it!! ;D ;D ;D

28gr of 2400 under a 350gr Hornady RN is a great combo too, very accurate and easy to shoot. ;)

I really don't know a whole alot about the process of reboring and rechambering but it seems to me that stubbing would be easier and cheaper.

I've had a couple of 7x30's in TC's and it is a wonderful cartridge.  (but a TC carbine is such an awkward thing!)  It would be on my 'have to have' list if H&R would make it!  44 Man
