TRacker 2 shooting low????????
« on: May 13, 2007, 05:55:01 AM »
I have a tracker 2 barrel on my frame and cannot raise the rear sight far enuff to bring my slugs up to point of aim. Before I file down the front sight is there a way to remove the rear blade and replace it with a taller one? I had the screws out of the rear sight but the blade would not freely come out. Was hoping there was someone here that had removed there rear sight blade.

Not sure what rear sight you have but on some you can back out the windage ajustment screw and the rear sight will slid out of the dove tail , you will also find another mounting screw under the dove tail .

You may want to call H&R as they use diffrent front sight heights and they should send you the proper front one .

Replacing the front sight would be an option. Its appears that the front sight is sweated on though. I think the shotgun barrels are sweated on as opposed to drilled and taped as on the rifles.

The rrear sight base is sweated on.  The sight assembly has a roll pin that needs to be drifted out in order to take it apart after removing the screw.  Be careful and don't loose or bend the spring.  Also, the windage adjustment screw can be backed out and the blade removed, without  removing the rest of the sight from the base.  Again, be careful of the spring.  You are correct, also, the front sight is sweated on, too.  I have the same problem with my Tracker I barrel.  The rear sight must be adjusted very high in order to hit POA.  I haven't tried filing down the front sight, yet.  I think I may work on that before deer season, though.

My Tracker I shoots over 12" low at 50 yards with the rear sight as high as it will go and still have the rear sight adjustment screw stay in place.

Does anyone sell a replacement blade for the rear sight?  I'd really prefer not to file down the front...

If you finally do decide to file your front sights , the best place to do it is at the range. Just go slow and use the method that us old muzzle loaders use. "File a little, Shoot a lot " .  The closer you get to where you want that front sight the more careful you have to be about the amount of metal you remove. It is much simpler when you have an adjustable rear sight as the front sight dimension isn't as critical as with a fixed rear.

When I finally decided that I had found the slug load that I liked and grouped well in my Tracker II [it also shot pretty low],  I bought 2 cases of the same lot sabot slug. THEN I set the rear sight to the middle of its movement range. That way I still had some adjustment available either way if I overstepped filing the front sight.  Then, as others here have already described, I filed a little, and shot a lot until I the group where I wanted it, 1" high @ 50yds, about 1" low at 100yds.

Every gun and every slug load is different. I do recall the Brenneke slugs for rifled barrels hitting VERY low initially. Is this the slug you're working with?

I gave the rear sight blade to a friend of mine today. He is a machinest and is gonna make a couple of them for me 1/8 " taller than factory. I've offered the 2nd one to Tom in a PM. If he doesn't take it I'll give it to the first one to ask here.
