Point of Impact change with velocity increase?
« on: May 20, 2007, 01:50:46 PM »
Was just wondering if any given bullet would print higher (or lower) with velocity increase presuming no change in sights? Would the a bullet traveling at say 1000fps print in the same place when traveling at say 800fps if there were no sight adjustment?  As in a S&W Mod 36 with a less than 2" barrel.

Generally, at short range, the slower bullet will print higher than will the faster one.  Heavier bullets also tend to strike higher than lighter bullets.  The reason for both is increased barrel time due to slower acceleration out of the barrel and consequently the barrel is at a higher point when the bullet leaves the muzzle.  As range increases though, the slower and heavier bullets will then fall below the line of fire taken by the faster bullets because they have more of an arc to their trajectory.
