scoping the 629

I am looking to scope my 629 and am wondering if the scope rings can mount in the same holes as the rear iron sight is mounted with or will I have to drill new ones? Anyone with any experience would be appreciated. Charlie

The 629 will require that you drill holes. For that reason I personally would not scope a 629. Pick up something like a Ruger Redhawk and put a scope on it, it comes with mounts and rings. Just my opinion.

Depending on how old or new it is it might have come from the factory already drilled and tapped for scope mounting. Look at the underside of the top strap to see if it has holes drilled and tapped. If not you can either use the B-Square no gunsmithing mount or have it drilled and tapped. All S&W L and N frames and I think maybe K frames as well have been D&T for several years now.

Like GB said, new S&W 629's mostly come drilled and tapped already. You use a K,L,N mount.  A quick look under th top strap will tell if it is drilled and tapped. You will see 3 holes if it is ready for a mount .  Nothing wrong with a Ruger, but a S&W 629 is a fine gun.  ;)

Unless it is fairly old it will be drilled for a base.  I prefer the Leupold Dual Dovetail Bases.  If you check the gun like the others suggested and it is drilled and tapped you could use the Leupold base that they say is for the S&W Classic.  The Leupold base not refered to as for the classic is for guns that need drilled and tapped according to Leupold.

I didn`t know that S&W was D&Ting the 629`s now. I have an older one with a 4 in. barrel that I got for CCW. Great guns.

The newer ones it's just a matter of removing the rear sight assembly and replacing it with a mount of choice and then the scope with rings on top of that.
