Possible first Freedom arms questions needed answered
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:42:50 PM »
Hey guys,

First of all My name is Brian and I am looking at getting my first freedom arms revolver in 475 L model 83 premier grade.   Now I have two that are on an online auction.  Both have 7.5 inch barrels and one was magna ported and the other wasn't.   SO for who has shot both can you tell me is there a big difference in the two or not much?     Also what would you choose for yourself and why?

If I scoped this gun would the ports blow back debree back at the scope?

Thanks  guys and nice meeting you

Brian

The Mag-na -ports will not blow back debris and harm the scope on a 7.5" FA. I consider the ports to be worthwhile on a scoped gun. My .475's and one .454 are ported. My .500 WE and one .454 are not. All are useable, it's a matter of personal preference, and the type of loads to be used.
However, about a dozen years ago, 2 friends and I did thorough tests on 3 different 7.5" .454 Mdl. 83's. Porting reduced max. velocity an average of 125 fps in that caliber on those guns. Loss in a .475 should be less (less pressure and velocity to begin with). Not a big deal in my opinion, but one should be aware of the probability before deciding.

Thanks for that feedback.     Was there a noticeable difference in recoil or muzzle rise on the ported one or not?

Thanks

Brian

can you give me a % of felt recoil reduction.   I am not that sensitive to felt recoil but just want to know that facts.

Thanks again

Brian

Porting tends to cause the handgun to recoil more directly to the rear, rather than the muzzle flipping so high. Impossible for anyone to accurately quantify "felt recoil" reduction, particularly as it relates to anyone else.
If in doubt and you can't test shoot one belonging to a friend, don't order the MNP.
