Took another look at the hr1871.com website,  and a nice figured walnut hr rifle showed up on the computer screen. It is the Target Model Rifle . Looks like it comes in the 38-55 and 45-70.  Can different caliber barrells be used on this rifle like on the other handi rifles?

The short answer is yes. It's a SB-2 in a different configuration, Send it back to the factory, get a 22-250 or 223 barrel put on it and you'll have a PD Classic  ;). The combinations are endless...

As Dave said, yes, not a problem. The Target is the 38-55, the Buffalo Classic is a 45-70. There's also a Buffalo Classic Carbine 45 Colt, all with the same SB2 frame. ;)

Have you seen either the Buffalo or Target model rifle  in person ? Is it worth the money?

Yes, they are, I have two BCs, and a Target, plus the 45 Colt Carbine, they'll cost you $325 to $375, depending on where ya find em new.

One last question  on that rifle:

Since it has the curved buttstock, is there a recoil pad that will fit it ?

Thanks,

Will that 45/70 handle the Hot Buffalo, garrett, corbon loads or only  standard factory loadings?  Does the 45/70 come with  sights or a tang sight?

The gun might but I'll bet your shoulder won't.

Bill's right, your body will let ya know what loads to shoot, the rifle will handle em if you can!! If you read Garrett's and BB's info on their web sites, you'll see their loads are safe in NEF Handirifles, the BC uses the same SB2 frame.

All .45-70 Magnum loadings are intended for use in the following firearms:
All Marlin Model 1895 variations made since 1972
Browning Model 1885 and 1886
New England Arms Handi-Rifle
Ruger #1 and #3
T/C Encore
Shiloh, Christian and Pedersoli Sharps
New Production Winchester 1886

Garrett lists some loads that aren't for the NEF, but it's only because the throats are too short in em for the bigger bullets, not that they won't handle the load. ;)

Thanks,

Yes, there are slip-ons that fit fine, or you can cut the stock off square and install a small Limbsaver Grind-to-fit. There's a link to BC recoil pads in the FAQs.
