Triple 777 powder
« on: May 22, 2007, 11:09:30 PM »
Anyone ever use Triple 777 powder. I'm thinking about using it in my 54cal deerstalker. Its supposed to shoot clean and you get higher velocities with the same powder charge. They say you use water and a patch for clean up. It sounds great.

Fiirst like to say triple 777 powder has to be reduced by 15 percent when starting with this powder.I have used this powder but not in my flinters,
Triple powder has a lot sharper recoil then using real black or pyrodex ,I here guys use it in there side locks, but you may run into problems with burning hole threw patches,I would use a wad over the powder before seating the patched RB.
I also would start with 530 dia: round ball and .017 patch material, this stuff can be pick up at walmart blue and white pillow material, remember to first wash the material before cutting it into patches.
Hey good luck with new m/l

There is no substitute for real black powder.  777 has a higher flash point than real black powder, thus possible hangfires. It burns no cleaner. A friend gave me a partial can of 777, to try.  I'll stick with real black powder. If you are looking for cleaner burning, try FFFG black, in your muzzleloader. Reduce your loads by 15% from usual FFG loads. I shoot patched round balls, with real black powder, and have no problems with fouling. I also clean my muzzleloaders with water, with a little dish soap added, so there is nothing new here. Black also gives instant ignition, and must be used in flinters.  From what I see at the gunshop, black is about $7.00 less per pound than 777.  Yes, 777, pyrodex, etc. is easier to find, Wal-Mart, Etc. , but there is a reason for this. These black powder substitutes have a higher ignition point than real black, and are classified differently, thus these stores are able to sell them. There is a reason that black has been around for 500+  years !

I tried 777 and found that clean up was a brute. There was a ring of crud just above where the ball sits, that took some scrubbing to get out. I gave the rest of the can away. I did run some loads over the crono and found some velocity increase. My deerstalker seems to like Pyrodex better than anything else, and my Trade rifle likes 3f black best. I plan on working with some other lubes to get a load for my Deerstalker using real black powder. There is nothing more reliable than real black powder.

I have tried 777 3F in my GPH under conicals and it worked very well (.28" 3 shot group at 75 yards), just make sure you use a magnum #11. Cleanup was easy and I did not have a crud ring problem. If I were you I would at least try it so you know if it works, then you will be prepared if you can't get some other type of powder. Then again, I like to experiment with all the different powders and bullets I can get my hands on. It just means more time to play and get use to the rifle.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.

It works fine in a cap lock. It will not work in a flint lock. I t cost a lot more than Geox black powder and has no advantage's. I have used it in my cap locks and still have some laying around here, but never use it any more. Go with the real black, it will  save you a lot of headakes.

I use 777 in my sidelock, it cleans up easily with warm water, and is less corrosive than BP.  Never had a problem with crud build up on conicals but it does build up on in-lines around the breech plug.  Hodgdon's web site doesn't say anything about reducing the load by 15% for safety reasons, it says to duplicate a black powder load the 777 must be reduced by 15%, I don't really understand the wording on this as it isn't really a warning??

Whether 777 is less, or more corrosive, really is not that important. All powders for use in muzzle loading firearms are corrosive. A complete cleaning after shooting is a must. I would not risk ruining one of my muzzleloaders by not cleaning after a shooting session, thinking that the powder I am using is less corrosive. Manufactures put spin on their products so they will sell, but I'm a firm believer in If you shoot it, then you clean it.

I have found T7 to be the best most consistant loose powder available to me. The clean-up is easy. And all the hype of "crud-rings" I've heard and read of for the past 5 years has not effected my end-target ability. ( as in hit the X ).( is there a crud ring? yea I can feel it)( burns out nipples too)
T7 performance is much like Swiss bp, in that it is a sporting grade powder. It is a hot, fast burning powder. High end products, such as above mentioned are differant than the Goex 2-3f and/or Pyrodex RS-P type powders.
There's a whole can of worms here, but I've beat Goex shooters hands down with Swiss too many tymes, and the same shooters never knew I was using T7 after that. that's the truth

forest2, that has far more to do about the shooter than the powder. I have kicked butt against far better rifles than mine, but that doesn't mean my rifle is better, it just means that "I" was better on that day.

Great stuff. using it solely. Easy cleanup and great ballistics with round balls in sabots.

Snowshoe, it has alot to do with the shooter shooting. I agree. And little to do with the powder used, I agree again..
(repeat)T7 is most consistant for me. I could argue till the sun comes-up, but that's not my intention.

Now I don't wanna step on no toes snowshoe, you got me beat by post's hands down, you are the seniour poster,

I have one rifle that will shoot acceptable groups with any powder you choose to pour into it. However it has a higher incidence of miss or hang fires when using any of the substitutes. I've another that is very inconsistent with 777, someone told me it is very sensitive to the pressure you seat your ball with. I haven't used it in either of my T/Cs.  ???

There is no reason anyone can't have real black powder if they want it, that is if it is legal to have it shipped where one lives.  Track of the Wolf, Graf and Sons here in Missouri, Coonies out of New Mexico and Missouri River Traders in Crofton, Nebraska all ship black powder.  I believe Track and Graf will ship smaller amounts.  Coonies and MRT only sell in case lots.  The Hazmat fee is $20.00 whether you order a couple pounds or a case and even with the hazmat charge it is still cheaper than any of the synthetics, and a better powder in muzzleloaders.  You could pool your resources with some shooting friends or bite the bullet and buy it yourself.  I order a case at a time and that allows me to buy it about $5.00 a can cheaper than I can locally.  With the $125.00 a case savings I figger it's worth it.

As forest2 has pointed out, 777 works best for him, so try it. Try everything you can get your hands on. Just remember that everything other than "real" black powder is a " substitute".  The more you try the more you get to shoot, and that is all good. Good luck and have fun.

There is no reason anyone can't have real black powder if they want it,
Some of us just don't have that kind of money. Pay check too Pay check is real. 11$ or 20$ per pound is an issue week to week.

Now considering there is 100 shots per pound,or better, and that most don't shoot 100 times each week.
it might be good advise to help others experiment with different powders. And help them consider the other variables of Black powder shooting sprts than powder choice and patch lube.

Guy's? Consistancy is Key! Learning to shoot the gun you have Now is Key too learning the art of black powder shooting.
Is there a "magic" patch or lube? One that will guarentee accuracy for you? Yes!

it's called confidence. mix'nmatch an hodpog don't make it, well i take that back. it will but it takes longer.

Anything can be overcome.  It is a matter of choices, determination and perserverance.  Trust me, I understand "paycheck to paycheck" but if I can do  it so can anyone else.  I'm far from even being "well off", let alone wealthy.  Last year I paid taxes on $17,000.00.  I don't know but I suspect that might be beneath the poverty level.
