BAD PRIMERS MY FOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: May 23, 2007, 08:50:25 AM »
Oh boy, do I feel like an All-American dumbell!!  Them "bad primers" turned out to be a simple problem of NO POWDER in the case!!  No wonder the gun seized up!! ::)  How in the name of heaven I did that is a big puzzle to me, except maybe I just was not pay'n attention.  NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW!  NOT ME!! :D

Dunno what your loading process entails but if it were like mine I'd be looking for an equal number of DOUBLE CHARGED cases.

I put my cases in a loading block and charge them from my powder measure one at a time so if I had one with no power that would mean one with a double charge.

Of course I have mutilple safe guards to prevent that from getting loading. First is I count as I charge and at the end of each row the count must be an even increment of ten and the total count and total number of cases must match. Then I take the tray to a strong over head light and tilt the tray at an angle and view each and every case and all must look the same to my eye.

Then and ONLY then do I put a bullet in a case.

Yeah that procedure came about as a result of no powder in a case and yeah there were some double charged cases so from that point on I had the full procedure as above not just the charging into the cases in the tray which had been the procedure before. Luckily like you I came up on the empty cases before the double charged so no harm was done.

MAKE 100% SURE you don't have double charged cases to equal the empty ones.

Dusty?...are ya still there Dusty?...You didnt go & shoot dem other shells in the same lot did you Dusty? ;)

It takes a man to own up to his mistakes and I salute you for it...I was reloading rifle cartriges before loading for handguns and got into the habit of putting powder charged cases back into the loading block then shining the light over them like Graybeard was saying.
I kept on doing this once I started loading for even those big straight walled pistol cases...it really isnt that bad.

Glad that you are ok & the mystery has been solved. Would have bet my shirt that you were dealing with hard primers and a nice tricked up dbl-action pull.

That 34 grains of H110 is actually a compressed load and a double charge would spill powder all over the reloader and the bench.

Dat's good Dusty. Mine was Bullseye that time and a double or even triple charge fits easily into most cases. In my case it was full wadcutters and a really light load and had a double charge popped it "might" not have blown the gun but I'm sure glad I didn't find out.

Good job, Dusty.  As posted, not many would have come back and "fessed" up.   ;D

I usually prime and seat the bullet right after this works best for me we all have our safety habits just as long as we follow them

been there and done that. Most people dont believe me when i tell them that if you dont have any powder in your case and pull the trigger you wont even hear a primer going off.

Been there, I powdered up some .221 FBs one evening with some RL-7. Which just happens to be small enough ball powder to fit thru the flash hole and spill out thru that area "normally" filled with a primer.

I personally believe that 99.99% of "bad primers" could be traced back to some error other than manufacturing of the primer.

got to agree. I dont know how many rounds of ammo ive loaded in my life but i probably average going through 5 cases of primers a year  and ive never had a bad primer.

One thing that I do is to use two loading blocks. I put mts in one then charge a case and place in the second block. I still check the charged cases with a mag light before seating bullets
