Dale, I did a little more research on the 3-9x40 Gameseeker, it has 3.8" on 3x, 3" when set at 9x. ;)

3" is enough IF you're always aware of it, the problem is, other things might be on your mind and it only takes one little slip and you end up with a bloody brow!! :o I've forgot and got a little too close to the scope and knocked my hat off a time or two, a gentle reminder that crawling the stock isn't good!!! If you can set yourself up at the bench so you're as upright as possible, it helps a lot, it's when we hunker down and lean into the rifle too much that can get ya in trouble when eye relief is in short supply. ;)

Hey Dale;
You're going to like that .450, kinda makes you think of Africa with the big belt and all. Another good scope to try is the Nikon Prostaff 2-7 x 32. they are only about $119.00 at oneclickshooting.com and Nikon are just about the clearest scopes I have ever seen.  Give them a look.

I have to agree. Nikon makes a great scope. I have had a 3x9x40 Prostaff. I really thought it was a great scope. The only reason I am going with the Pentax is it has the bullet drop rectal and the price is right. If Nikon could offer the same scope at the same price that would be the one I would buy.

Well guys I picked up my 450 Marlin barrel today at the post office. It is a real nice barrel. ;D ;D I was a little amazed at the size of the bore. :o It is huge. The first frame I tried it on fit perfect. ;D Looks like it came on this frame. I think I will Flitz the barrel tonight. Then I need to get a scope for it and off to the range I go. The thing I don't like is it is going to be expensive to shoot. After I shoot a couple boxes of shell through it I will probably not pull it out till deer season. Expect a range report in a couple weeks. ;D ;D ;D

The Hornady Leverevolution ammo has the best price I've seen ... $27 a box from Midway + shipping and $29 at Gander Mountain. Save the brass cases. You may get into re-loading later and new 450 Marlin brass is not cheap. It may not be as expensive to shoot as you think ... one box could last 2 to 3 trips to the range. A 450 Marlin gives a lot of shooting pleasure with very few shots ;D

The Hornady Leverevolution ammo is going to be the round of choice for me and I guess $29.00 a box is not really all that crazy. If you compare it to $16.00 to $18.00 I pay for little old 204 rounds. Like another member said you could allways sell the brass on Ebay for 60 cents a piece. I polished the bore last night with Flitz and had hoped to get a scope this week but am short on pay because I have had to go to the emergency room twice this week. I have some serious problems with my back. Any way in a couple weeks it will be scoped and ready to go.

well guys this is the scope I have decided on putting on the 450 Marlin.  Pentax Gameseeker 1.5-6x40  Shotgun Rifle Scope. It has 4'' of eye relief. I think that should be enough to keep from being kissed by it. This is not going to be a long range gun so the lower power should be fine. I really don't think I will shoot it over 200 yards. Any thoughts on this scope.

The 3 reviews at Midway are good, only time will tell. They list the eye relief as 3.0"-3.8", the Pentax sight lists it as 3.0"-3.6", neither is good for the 450 IMO, unless you only use the scope on the lower powers, kinda of negates the use of the reticle tho. :-\

Tim or anyone else know of a scope that has a bullet drop reticle that has alot of eye relief and is priced at $150.00 or less? If not do you know of a decent scope that has good eye relief? I really don't want to get kissed with this scope.

Dale:

If your not going to shoot over 200 yards...any reason you need a BDC reticle?

Dale,

As Mac intimated, for use under 200yds, you don't need a BDC reticle, factory loads in the 450 Marlin will work fine with a standard duplex reticle. With the Leverevolution ammo, zeroed 3" high at 100yds, you're 2" low at 200yds.

For scopes, the Banner 1½-4½x32 would be my first choice for well under $100..

http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3294

I just put a 2-7x32 Legend on my .444, it's listed as 3½" of eye relief, but it has more than that, I measured it at 3.6" on 7x and almost 4" on 2x, and that's with the ocular adjustment almost turned out to the limit which is where they always are for my eyes. :-\

Dale,

Another option would be to find a used Leupold VX1 2-7x32, you should be able to find one in the $125-$150 range, I have one I bought here in the main classifieds used for $125, and two new ones for $190 each. It has 4" of eye relief and excellent image resolution and clarity.

Here's another option that my float your boat!! It's a shotgun scope, so it should be very durable, has almost 4" of eye relief, it has a parallax setting of 75yds which I doubt will make any difference for hunting accuracy, I have a 1½-6x38 S&W shotgun scope with a 75yd parallax setting, shot a nice 3" group at 200yds with it on my 45-70 with PMC +P ammo, so I wouldn't worry about parallax out to 200yds.

I just bought one of these scopes, it's very clear and the price is right, haven't mounted it yet.

The VX-1's with their non-critical eye relief means just that...Non-critical... You can put on heavy hunting coats and still have a excellent sight picture with out having to move the scope. They are unlike most other scopes with this regard...Cheaper scopes will start out with a large black ring around the viewing area even at the correct eye relief...You can push much further back with the Leupolds before the sight picture becomes like that...They are excellent scopes for heavy kicking rifles..

Product ID: Bue713947

Manufacturer: Bushnell
Price: $75.00
I don't know how to post links.

That's one I was going to post for you, and it does have 6" eye relief, but I don't know how durable it is, the other Banner I posted has an excellent reputation on 45-70 leverguns. Seems to me Lik2hunt has used that scope, maybe he can offer some experience.

Tim thanks alot I think that is the one I will go with. Did you know that Bushnell has a reticle program? For $55.00 you send them your scope and they put the one you want in it. I am goin to try to post a link to see if it works. http://bushnell.com/general/riflescopes_techtalk.cfm

Bushnell will only do scopes that have adjustable objectives, not standard scopes like the 3-9x40. TK Lee will install dots in just about any scope. Leupold will also change the reticle in most of their scopes. ;)

You might consider the Bushy Elite 3200 3x-9x or the fixed Weaver K6. They would both be good for 100 yards. I have both and they are charming!!!

Dale, here's a pic of the Nikon Prostaff Realtree Shotgun scope mounted in medium Leupold Rifleman rings on my .500 Handi, I decided it would be a good spot for it. ;)
