:D It didn't take long in Nam to convince me to dump the little black pop gun and pickup an AK.  Larger round, more effective at longer range, good penteration, and reliable.

I dumped the old 30-30 many years ago and went to an SKS for a truck gun, loaded with one thirty round mag full of soft points and another loaded thirty round mag in the glove box and I think I am ready for even a SHTF situation. I have used the SKS to kill several yotoes, a few dogs as well as a deer or two.

Either the SKS or AK makes a perfect kick around, self defense or fun to shoot gun, ammo is readily available, fairly cheap, they don't require a lot of tender loving care, and are still reliable weapons.

Either an AR or AK would do the job well. Logistics favor the AR, so that's what works for me!

I use a min-14.  It's  not a tack-driver, but it is loaded with 40 round mags and has taken it's share of coyotes and woodchucks around the house.  It is the most reliable semi-auto that I own.  (and I own an AK and an SKS).

in a SHTF situation id use an ak 47 (which i will have in another month :D)for anything up to 150 200 yards, with 30 round mags, for longer distances id use my scoped ruger m77 mkII in 300 mag or my ole faithful...my lee enfield no 4 mk 1/3 it has open sights and is rugged and is extremely fast for a bolt action and it has good accuracy and a 10 round detachable mag, or for shorter distances my colt combat commander 45 acp or my 870 12 guage.
they can try and take my guns....but i aint givin' em up until all my shells are gone or i quit breathing.

There's a lot to be said for a short carbine, the M-1 Carbine was a wonderful design but shoots a pretty anemic round, the Marlin Camp Carbine in 45ACP was a good idea, but of limited capability, as it was a blowback design.  Ruger's PC-4 seems like an improvement, if not for the godawful trigger, the one I shot was 20 pounds or better.  But the owner had found 20-round magazines, and 20 rounds of 40 caliber hollowpoints at 1500 fps would certainly do in a pinch!   Pretty much useless past 100 yards, but up close it's short, handy, and a natural pointer.  One could do worse.

Personally, I think the 450 Bushmaster on an AR platform might be the ultimate answer......Jeff Cooper's "Thumper", a heavy-hitting semiauto.  Terminal ballistics wouldn't be a concern!

AR with a collapsible stock, but chambered in 6.8 or as Papajohn stated the 450 Bushmaster.  At this point the 6.8 would probably win out because of the ability to outperform the 223 down range.  An AR just offers more options period.
