Singing the Praises of the 45-70
« on: May 21, 2007, 12:04:45 PM »
This is a bit off topic as the rifle involved is an XLR -----------------but everyone needs to know about 45-70's----right?

Well my 45-70 shoots LESS than  one MOA at 100 yards. The last three groups were all under an inch and one group I fired were all touching. And I am not shooting wimpy loads. I am shooting 350 gr Hornady FP over 50 gr of IMR-4064. There is considerable recoil but somehow the rifle shoots accurately.

I am a happy camper!

Well congrats Mc, that's nice shooting, and to be expected of a $600+ rifle, it had darn well better shoot good!! :D

But that's a trapdoor load according to Hodgdon, their levergun load starts with 58gr @ 1967fps, goes to 62gr @2085fps. 50gr is a max trapdoor load for a 385gr cast bullet, their test barrel is  24" also.

Tim I have been looking for one and I have found below $600.00 Buds gun shop has them for 1895G   Marlin 1895 G .45-70 Guide Gun 18" Walnut    $441.63  and you can get the 1895CB   Marlin 1895 .45-70 Government 22" Walnut 45    $550.52. If you wanted the Guide gun you could get it to your ffl for probably $500.00 and you are right about the other when it is all said and done it will cost you $600.00 but some day I will own one. ;D ;D ;D

If you read Mc's post again, he's talking about an XLR, find one for less than $560 and you're doing good. ;) I can get a new 1895 guide gun for around $420, but it isn't an XLR, that's for sure!!

McLernon Had a 1895 Guide gun since they first came out. Elk load was 405 gn. moly coated Remington's  traveling at 1800fps. Groups were just under an 1" at 100 yards. Have been using Guide gun for last year for lever action silhouette matches. 300gn. fngc  at 1700fps. Really happy with Guide Gun.  Also using 1871 Buffalo Classic Hunter for Military matches with same load and 16oz. recoil reducer in stock. I thought there would be more of a difference in FPS, considering the difference in barrell lengths. It's funny to see bulletts flying about 2' higher than Ram and then dropping in for hit. (sometimes)  Pumkin launchers are great. It doesn't seem to matter where you hit them, they ALWAYS go down. Now all I need is a different rear peep type sight that will work at longer ranges. The stock one is too short or is the front to tall? Any suggestions?

FG, read thru the FAQs and Help sticky, there are topics on sights that you should read.

As far as the difference in velocity and barrel lenths, depends on the powder, IMR4198 and H322 used with 350gr jacketed bullets, produce 150-200fps more velocity in the 32" BC barrel over the 22" Handi barrel. ;)

Quickdtoo  Thanks for info on the sights. Velocity difference was only 75 fps between Guide Gun and 1871. I was given 27 pounds of Accurate 5744 powder, so that's what I use now in every thing I can. So now I get to start figuring out new loads. I'm wondering if I should a Vernier Tang Peep sight on 1871 or a Williams Receiver Peep sight? Any ideas? Thanx Chris

I am seriously thinking of getting another 45-70, I like my XLR so much. But Handi's in 45-70 are not to be found in Canada. Short supply of Handi's in Canada and lack of a barrel program has prevented me from becoming a Handi-holic. I might, however be starting on the road to Marlin-holicism as I am being tempted to get an 1895.

Expensive illness-------------------eh?

Chris, H4198 provide only 25fps difference tween the 22" and 32" BC barrel with the 300gr Nosler Partition, 2425fps in the 22" and 2450fps in the 32", so powder choice makes a big difference!!

You can go with a vernier sight mounted on the wrist, or get the Smith long range sight if you don't like the Williams FP or WGRS as shown in the FAQs.

MC Not being Canadian, I don't understand. eh Could'nt your friends from this side of that magic line send you one? Or don't they allow that either? No, that's not an expensive illness, it's cheap therapy. eh  What's the difference between a Guide Gun and a XLR? One's shiny. eh Chris

I guess I'll stick with old stumpy. It shoots better than I do. If I really want to reach out and touch'em  I'll use my 1871 Buffalo Classic.

Burntmuch So are blonds, but that doesn't make them great house pets. Just, one man's opinion. I know I can afford a new rifle or two. But then again I only catch and release house pets. Guns I like to keep around for a long time or till I get bored with them.
