NEF Smoothbore shooting low
« on: June 27, 2007, 02:10:40 PM »
I have a NEF Pardner Turkey in 12 Gauge 3 1/2" chamber that is a badass Turkey gun. Rifled slugs
through it are a different story.

I'd like to be able to use this as a 50 yard and under brush gun for deer but at the moment it's not even a 25 yard gun.
I've shot a bunch of boxes of Remington Sluggers and Brennekes all in 2 3/4" size. They consistently drop 6 inches
at 25 yards. 50 yards is even more pathetic. I've tried both Full and Improved Cylinder chokes.

Any ideas on what might be wrong? The only other thing I can think of is to try some 3" or 3 1/2" slugs. Could a 2 3/4 slug in a 3 1/2 chamber cause issues like this?

What are you using for sights? do you mean it is hitting 6 inches below where you are aiming? or have you actually taken a laser and shot and marked level from the midline of your bore to the point of reference on the target to index the drop?

I have a NEF Turkey barrel.  Last year for deer season I bought a Carlson Rifled Choke Tube  http://www.choketube.com/wbmw.html.  I thought it did a good job.  I was using Remington BuckHammer slugs and it was hitting where I was pointing at 50 yards.  I only had a clip on fiber-optic sight at the front of the barrel.  The combination worked for me, it scored me a nice 8 point whitetail.

Point of impact is 6 inches lower than where I am aiming. It is just the stock bead sight.

In order to get more elevation for the point of aim, I have used the top center of the un-cocked hammer and held my cheek weld, then cocked the hammer while still holding my point of aim.  It takes some practice.  For this fall's deer season I have been thinking about using some epoxy to secure a rear sight to my barrel.  I had checked with one local gunsmith and he thought that the barrel was too thin to drill and tap.  He offered to silver solder a scope mount on the barrel but wanted about $150 by the time he mounted the scope mount and re-blued the barrel.

The other option would be to point at a spot 6" higher than where you want to hit.  Are you planning on using this for deer hunting?

if you have a rib then the tru glo sights might be the ticket. I put a set on my Benelli Nova and it made a world of dfference. they have a ghostring that is really nice or the more traditional. I beleive they do have a version for plain barrels as well. I am assuming yours has a rib, being a turkey gun and all. the tru glo sights are also great for turkey sights. :)

I'd like to use it for deer hunting this season but not with it shooting the way it is now.
It does not have have a vented barrel so my options are very limited as far as sights go.
I think my first step will be to try some magnum sized slugs to see if that makes any difference
and if not I may order a rifled choke tube.
