5th day at the range
« on: May 30, 2007, 08:07:56 AM »
Today the winds were gone so I loaded up 20 rounds and headed out to the range to try my selected loads.    75 grains - volume - 55 grains weighed of Pyrodex RS  with my 20:1 cast lyman 457677 bullet, weighing 490 grains, and lubed with my secret sauce.  I also add a .09 lube disc and a .06 over lube wad along with the .03 over powder wad.

I discovered by accident that I get better accuracy if I shorten the bullet length from what is shown in the picture.  It seems to shoot better if I lower the bullet one more lube ring.  The below picture show four shots at 1 1/2 " with the fifth shot opening the group to 1 7/8".  The group was shot today at 186 yards which is as far as I can shoot at my range.  I again used my 3X William Malcom 3/4" 3X scope.  The cartridge that I shot is on one side, and a bullet recovered from soft dirt is on the other side.

The rifle used is a Pedersoli 34" barreled 45-70 1874 Sharps weighing 13.5 pounds.  And yes, I did use a blow tube.  Using a PACT Chronograph, the bullet flew at 1320 (avg) fps and dropped 15" from a 100 yard zero.

Dear Crowfeather:
Please give my your opinion or thoughts about your Malcom scope, and it's mounts. Do the mounts allow accurate adjustments?
Nice work to get such results!

Woodbutcher ,

Apparently for the price, 299.00 from Buffalo Arms, it is a good deal if you want to scope your rifle.  The mounts are hard to lock, and keep locked, but once you learn how, it isn't that bad.  The instructions for setting up leave a lot to be desired.  There is a locking screw under the front mount, but if you tighten it, you can't adjust for height.  The locking device on the top of the mount works well enough though.  I, and the gunsmith that drilled and tapped the necessary four mounting holes in the barrel, both believed that the short scope looked better than the longer scope on the rifle.  The weight is about 1 pound less than the longer scopes.

There can't be click adjustments for competition.  I adjust by placing the cross hairs on the point of aim, and then adjusting the cross hairs to the point of impact.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't change what I bought.  As you can see, it does hold it's accuracy.

It isn't a long range scope as it can't adjust for the longer ranges.  As of yet, I do not know how far out it will go.

Hope this helps,

CF

ps  While I was at the gunsmith's shop, I saw an Italian rifle, NOT a Pedersoli or Uberti, that had such a large hammer, the scope wouldn't fit over the barrel.

Thank you Crowfeather. What the heck, those that came before us didn't have it all that easy either!
