What's the trick?

When I reload flat base bullet (rather than boat tail) I have a number that result in crunched or at least wrinkled necks.  Is there a trick to keeping this from happening?

Most recently it was reloading for a 30-30. 

I appreciate the advice.

Do you inside chamfer your cases ?

Some bullets, even tho they are 'flatbased' have a more rounded heel to them than others. Presumably to aid starting a bullet.
I would try a slightly deeper cut when you do inside chamfer.

I agree that the inside chamfer is mosy likly the reason , also what dies are you using ? and are you just neck sizing or FL sizing ?

It could be just not enough chamfering. Or it could be an out of spec expander button. You could try a Lyman M-type expander die since it can also flair the mouth slightly.

I had some troulble with lead bullets on my 30/30 but started using an RCBS neck expander die with the .309 ball and the problem went away.

Thanks for the advice.  I will try a deeper chamfer and see if the problem goes away..

Did ya trim to length ? I have had the same problem and found a few cases would be a bit longer than the rest , if i used the longest case to set the die it worked ok but grouped bad if i used a short one i would lose the longer cases as you decribed . If I trimmed all the same and camfered inside and out the problem went away and groups were good ! I do it on new brass now and don't lose any cases , before i sized and camfered and would lose a few cases !
