Taurus PT99AF info gun and reloads
« on: May 03, 2007, 02:49:58 PM »
I just purchased a used Taurus PT99AF. Looks nice and seems to shoot the 30 rounds I fired thru it pretty nice. What can I expect for accuracy reliability etc from this gun? AND I like reloading and wondered if anyone has this model what loads work for you? I reload for 45 acp and 38.
I wanted a 9mm for awhile and lo and behold one came my way....... aint it great when life works like that? NOw comes brass, bullets, dies etc. This is nickel?or SS. I am not sure. Not even of it's age. I need to do some research on the serial number. Any help and info is greatly appreciated

It says on the barrel       Taurus PT 99 AF 9mm  PARA

I think the PT99 and the PT92 are the same gun except the 99 has adjustable sights and the 92 has fixed sights but don't quote me on it. Anyway I bought a 92 after shooting my son-in-law's 92. This is a nice gun but I haven't had a chance to shoot groups with it yet due to the windy weather. I did burn up a box of shells popping rocks and I hit nearly every one. They were in the 20 to 25 yd. range. I reload for several calibers but Academy has CCI Blaser for less than $7 a box so I don't plan to reload for the 9 mm. Enjoy you 99.

While not a 99, hope these comments help.

I have had a PT 92 AF for quite a while.  Got it days before the hi cap mag ban went into effect.  The gun is fine for the range plinking I've done and is minute of bad guy accurate.  I haven't tried real serious accuracy work with it but I think I have put 5-10 shots into 2.5 to 4 inches at 20 yard or so. It seems to digest nearly all loads I feed it.  I have had a few stove pipes that may have been from limp wristing or very light reloads.

The gun is easy to clean and operate and seems reasonably durable - mine has the aluminum frame. I like it better once I put some thin Hogue rubber grips on it as my hands are small.

Reloading, I'd recommend middle of the road loads (any reputable load book) of 115 to 124 or 130 gr and you should be fine.

One thing that keeps me from shooting this gun more is that I don't like reloading 9mm - the small cases are not as nice to handle as 38, 357, or ever the 40 SW.  Loading 9mm makes you want some sort of a progressive real quick. And as an old revolver guy I hate chasing my brass.

Also the small case and high pressures it operates at require you watch bullet seating depth, crimp tightness, and powder charge closely.  Slight variations can mean big differences in pressures. Nothing real scary if you use reasonable care.

The nice part of reloading 9mm is that a pound of powder makes a lot of loads.

115 gr Ranier or Xpert round nose plated bullets in front of 4.5 gr Titegroup.  Be advised, according to the Taurus manual, shooting handloads will void the warranty.  How will they know?

I have a 99 in stainless.  Got it before the AWB and it is accurate enough, it is not a bullseye gun.  I even used it in the PA IPSC championship.  Great gun, reliable, easy to shoot.

9mm is my favorite autoloader round. Every time I go to the range I come back with more 9mm brass than I went with. Once used brass is almost always available online for cheap prices. I usually use cast or Rainier bullets with 5 grains of Unique.
