Monte Carlo stocks with receiver sights
« on: May 15, 2007, 11:23:13 PM »
I've got a straight stock, straight grip camo laminate stock (exactly what I thought I wanted) on my 45-70 now and it's "wailin the tar" out of me. I'm thinking about going with the laminated Monte Carlo style. I sighted down one today and I think it will work... I'd just like some experienced advise, before I spend any more $, thanks.

Dave

I have the same stocks on my 45/70 ( except in RED ) and i don't notice any diffrence between them and the Monticarlo set that was on it . What part is " wailin the tar out of you " ? Is it just the recoil itself or the way the stocks fit you ?

Stimpy, I think it's the small butt pad area and the way the stock fits. The recoil isn't intolerable. It seemed to me that the monte carlo style had a larger butt pad area and with my head higher it would make it more comfortable, I just wasn't sure if I'd be able to get my head low enough to use the receiver sights. I've only found one Handi rifle up here with that style stock, but it was at Walmart and they have trigger locks on their guns so I wasn't able to cock it and look down the top of the barrel. I think I was able to get lined up, hard to tell.

Follow up,
I bought a straight stock pistol grip from Gunstocks Inc. with a Decelerator pad @ 14.5 LOP, HUGE difference. I've got the stock shaped up nicely, two more coats of oil and I'm ready to go.
My good friend and hunting partner rough shaped the stock for me and fitted the stock to the receiver (shaped and glass bedded). I got it sanded down to it's final shape and figure, nice work if I do say so myself and I'm applying a Tung oil finish. I'm REALLY happy with the way this is turning out.
Unfortunately, while he was chiseling and rasping on my new stock (I thought it only needed a little work, I couldn't watch, kinda like when you get a hair cut, you only want to see the end result) I was perusing his work bench, sitting there, minding it's own business, was a jar of Pyrodex. I was checkin' it out and Denny asks me if I've ever loaded it. I say "no" and he says "it occurs to me that these Handi rifles are the perfect gun for Pyrodex/Black powder cartridges, take it home and try it". I did, I doubt that I'll ever shoot smokeless again. Shot clean through a dead cottonwood (36" diameter) with a 420gr HCFN, mild recoil, crack not a boom and wait for the smoke to clear so you can see if you hit sumthin. I like it.

The problem with BP substitutes is they cost as much as smokeless, and you have to use more of it for less velocity, not very cost effective. There was a time that I could get Goex for $6 a lb, those days are over unfortunately. :-\ Enjoy it while you can!! ;D

Tim, up here I can get Pyrodex for $16.95 a pound, Hodgdon 4198 or 4895 is$26.95 a pound. Regardless of price, Pyrodex is FUN. I'm gonna do a penetration test on a dead cottonwood, Smokeless vs. smokey. I"ll post pics this weekend (range report Alaska style). I kinda hope the tree stands long enough to complete the test, if not, that's even better  ;).

That's what pyro and T7 are here, within a dollar or two of the price for smokeless which is $17-$20.

Dave Weiss:  Quickdtoo's posting in the FAQs about receiver sights has a photo of a Handi with a Monte Carlo stock and a Williams WGRS peep sight.  Perhaps Tim could comment on how well it works with the Monte Carlo stock?

I shot this group with that 45-70 just like it is, 28gr 2400 and the 350gr Hornady RN at 100yds. I made a sight adjustment after shot #2, the corrected it to #4. Point of aim is 6 O'clock in the white. ;) That laminated pallet wood stock has a bit lower comb by about 3/8" or so, than most monte stocks, it came on my 204 Ruger Handi.
