Successful wild hog hunt. Porkchops!
« on: June 03, 2007, 06:39:30 AM »
Did me a wild hog hunt here in Wisconsin 2 weeks ago. I forgot to take my digital camera, so we settled on the 35mm, then developed, then scanned, hence the poor quality images.

5 days (nights) of hard hunting before I found this guy. They are crafty critters, strictly nocturnal. I shot this fellar the night before the pics were taken. Thank God for the super low light qualities of Zeiss glass...(smirk)

This boar might only go 1/5th the weight of hogzilla, but hey, that is what you get when hunting 100% freeranging critters.

Very nice! I have heard of wild hogs in Wi but have never seen them anywhere, anytime.

Thanks gents. Yeah, it was alot of planning and scouting and walking trying to find sign of their whereabouts.  As much effort I had in this hunt, I'd still say some luck played into it. Right place, right time. Well, for me anyway, not him.. LOL

What kind of rifle/cartridge did you use.

I shot him with my 338 Win Mag, with a 225 grain Nosler Accubond. Obviously I never recovered the bullet, as it exited and is now who knows how deep into the hillside. A bit overkill I know, but the 338 is my favorite rifle plus more importantly it has a 3x9 Zeiss on it that has slightly better light transmsion than the VXIII Leupold glass I have.

But, for the heck of it, on the next hog hunt, I may take my 30-06 with 180 grain Failsafes or perhaps some TBBCs.

Too many decisions  ;D

I hear they are also in Clark, Bayfield, and Manitowac, among a few others as well.

I didn't think we had hogs in WI
Nice job!! Sounds like it was a good hunt and well-earned.

If what I've heard/read about hogs is correct, they'll be all over in a decade or so.  Kind of like the turkeys ?..?

BTW, isn't there some non-native Russian boars/hogs or something like that around somewhere in the state that the DNR is trying to eradicate??
