Encore or Contender in .30-06
« on: May 26, 2007, 09:59:28 AM »
I currently have a Remington 700 adl in .30-06 I bought used but in excellent shape.  Between the original owner and myself, I think only about 30-40 rounds have been through it. I am considering selling it or trading it for an Encore or Contender in .30-06 because I want to keep the caliber and I would eventually like to get different barrels for it.  My question is what are the major differences between the Encores and the G2 Contenders?  I realize I will probably have to put some additional money towards getting one whether new or used even if I trade.  Any information is appreciated.

Well, one major difference is that you can't get a 30-06 in a Contender.  Pressures are to high for that frame.

The G2 Contender is about 1.5 pounds lighter and is smaller than the Encore, but is plenty strong for the rounds it is designed for.  The Encore is built to handle more powerful rifle and pistol calibers.

Until this year Contenders were the ones that you could get factory rimfire barrels for.  As of this year there are factory rimfires being made for Encores, but I haven't seen one yet.

So if you have a need for an 06 then the Encore is the way to go.  Be careful though.  These things are addictive.  I bought a Contender years ago and they seem to multiply in the safe!!

Keith is right they are addictive.  Wife gave me a Contender 20 years ago.  I now have 15 barrels for it.  Then she gave me a TCR, Six rifle barrels and a 12ga barrel.  Three years ago she gave me an Encore, Only got three barrels for it so far.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
