Scope Choice for Drilling or Combo

What scope or scopes and the power do you use on your combo or drilling?

Hello dougk,
    I have a Leupold 1.5 - 5 Vari - X III mounted on top of my combo gun. I keep the scope on it's lowest power incase I need to make a quick shot from jumping game. At it's lowest power it has a very large field of view and I'm able to shoot with both eyes open, this makes it extremely fast to get on target.
If a target presents itself out of shotgun range I just crank up the power on the scope and place the rifle bullet were I want it.
This little scope really amazes me at how well it works in low light.

  My old drilling has a Bausch & Lomb 1.5x6 and it's served me well.  The problem with it is, it just doesn't let in enough light for that last few minutes before dark.  The way i hunt these days i could use that last few minutes!

  I have it in my mind to buy a 3x9x40 Zeiss and beable to switch between scopes as i wish...  I just need to do the leg work on getting the claw mount for "that" scope...

  Now, if i had your $$ i'd probable have a Schmidt & Bender or maybe a 8 by 56mm Swarovski like this one put on it...

I use Leupold's but the next scope will from Mueller.  They have a shotgun scope http://www.muelleroptics.com/products/MU2732IGR.html that would be perfect for a combo gun.  The price is great $159 (would someone kick me for dropping $300 on a used Leupold) and they have a lifetime warranty that appears to be the same as Leupold.

I've never heard of these Muellers but the ads sound good and the price is great. But has anyone ever done a light gathering comparison with the Leos? That one that DougK shows isn't for rifles recoil as I read it. It shows shottys, front stuffers and cross bows.
 If it's stand the hammering of a 9.3X74R reliably I'd get one but I'd keep the Leo 1.5X5 handy!

Any scope that will take the pounding from shotguns will stand up to rifles such as you mention.

Really? I was under the impression that the sharper snap of a high powered rifle will shake things loose inside.
Shotguns have more of a slower roll to the recoil.

From having used both on the combo gun.  I would say it felt to me that the shotgun would be more of a bruiser than the 30-06. 

I was looking at the scope again and like the lighted dot for low light and the outer circle that showed 15 inches at 40 yards.  That scope is screaming to be on the 223/12 ga.  which is my turkey, varmit, night time gun.

I'd be tempted to give it a go on my new Chapuis DR that's a 9.3X74R. If they're a good quality scope that gathers light like the Leo's.

"Hi Mike,
I would hesitate to mount it on a 375 unless there were some type of recoil reducing modifications done such as a muzzle break. The best scope suited for that rifle to handle the recoil would be our 3-10x44 Tac II.

 So based on this I'd say that this scope isn't suitable for use on a drilling with a fair sized rifle tube.
 I thought you guys may want to know.

I just finished mounting the Mueller Multi-Shot 2-7 on my Valmet 412 12/222 combo gun.  I am very impressed with the scope.  A few nights ago I was comparing the Mueller Multi-Shot to a Leupold Vari-X III and in low light conditions I could not see any difference between the glass in either scope.

In low light or night hunting conditions i really like the lighted dot.

Also I dropped the gun and it landed on the Mueller scope, other than a gash in the scope case it works fine.

The German's tend to be way over-scoped in my opinion.  Most seem to be shooting 6 power or higher with 46mm or larger objectives.  They have more liberal shooting hours than us so they need the larger objective lenses.  I just don't understand why they like the higher power fixed scopes.  Personally I would go with a 1.5x6 or so of any of the highest quality scopes.  Whoever was needing the scope mounts, if you tell me what you need, I'll look here in Germany and see if I can find them.  Slight possibility that they might be cheaper here.
