New 336SS problem
« on: June 09, 2007, 12:59:21 PM »
I bought a new 336SS 30-30 in April and shot it today for the first time.  It would not eject the spent brass on about every 3rd or 4th shot, an some of the times when it did eject it was pretty weak, as in it would throw the brass about only about 6 inches.

Should I send this back to Marlin for a warranty repair or is this a common problem with a fix?  I don't mind sending it back if this is the best option.  I really like the rifle but hate that I had this problem out of the box.  Thanks in advance for any help!

BTW, I shot a box of Remington 170gr SP and also a box of Hornady Leverevolution - it really liked the LE ammo and it was cutting holes at the 50 yds I shot it today!

First, are you working the lever aggressively?   Marlins need to be stroked quickly to get a good ejection.

Wild west makes what's called a "bear proof" ejector that is somewhat stronger than factory.

Sounds like it's just new and tight, should smooth out with use.  Work the lever with it well-lubed in front of the TV some night and it should slick up.  And yes, working the lever faster might help with ejection.  My 336's fling brass so far away I have to go looking for it.

Thanks guys.
papajohn428 - that's what I was expecting... to have to go looking for the brass (not dropping them at my feet!)

I've received some good advice off this and another board so I'm going to try and see if I can identify the problem.  I did spend quite a lot of time cycling the action after I bought the gun since it was about 2 months until I was actually able to get to the range (opens in June).  I actually thought I may have damaged something doing this, but based on the feedback this is not likely.

I'll report back once I can dig into it and get to the range.  Thanks again.

Ejection problem:  Have you fired any other cartridges in your gun besides the Hornady Leverevolution?  I have never had ejection problems with my several 336 Marlins.  I'm not certain, but the Hornady ammo may be higher pressured than standard 30/30 ammo.

I have a Savage 30/30 and it will handle standard 30/30 ammo, but the cartridge will stick in the chamber with the slightest higher pressure loadings.

I have a 336 Cowboy in 30/30 and I just pulled it out of the safe to take shooting tomorrow.

I would try some standard Winchester or Remington loadings and if they don't eject way out, then you might consider calling Marlin.  The Marlin people are great customer service specialists.  The only Marlin that I have needed servicing is my 444 Marlin Texan.  The throat eroded away and accuracy wained.

After 3,557 rounds it needed a new barrel.  I sent it to Marlin.  The gun had a 24" round barrel with a barrel strap instead of a cap.  They replaced the fore end, the cap, the magazine tube and the barrel for $150.   My original barrel was a micro grooved and it shot absolutely deadly accurate.  The replaced it with a 22" bbl with Ballard rifling.
