Best FACTORY .243 ammo
« on: May 07, 2007, 02:55:17 PM »
Just a quick question. Tell me what shoots best in your rifle.
Just bought a .243 for my daughter and not looking to reload (I know, just do it already  ::)  :)  )
Want factory ammo that you've seen good accuracy and clean, fast kills.  Most if not all or our shots will be under 150 yards.
I'd like to stay at 95 or 100 gr due to its better BC and SD numbers.
Thanks.

I've had good accuracy with factory 100gr Rem Core-Lokt ammo. My son and I reload our .243s with 100gr Core-Lokts and have never looked back. Good accuracy aqnd performance.

I've got to agree with Dave, the Remingtons are hard to beat.

BEST would be defined as what shoots best in YOUR rifle, what works great in one won't necessarily be true for another. Mine shoots the Federal Power-Shok 100gr very well, the 95gr Fusion almost as good, and neither will break the bank. ;)

This is a very general question...I'm assuming you are going to use the gun for hunting deer...
I have used a .243 since 1980 and have used most of the factory loadings...I have seen the
best results on deer in the 100 grain loadings with the  Hornadys, the Federal Premium Sierra
GameKing SPBT, and Nosler Partition and the Remington CoreLokts...I have killed 8-10 deer with
all of these....That being said, I have gone back to the CoreLokts because my Ruger just loves
them...I have killed about 80 deer with that bullet, but I would be comfortable with any of the
above...

I have also had good luck with the Federal Premium 85gr Sierra HPBT, killed at least 30 deer with
this one, it outshines the others once you move past 200 yards...If I reloaded that would be my
bullet especially when hunting over fields.

I gotta agree with all the above answers. While mine shoots the Rem just fine, my brotherinlaw's likes the Win and one of my younguns likes Fed. Luckily 243 shells don't cost as much as the magnum shells so you can buy a box of each and try them out. This way your youngun gets some trigger tiime, also. I'd stick with the 95-100 gr bullets.

I haven't gotten around to reloading the 243 yet, but the best factory cartridge I've tried has been the Federal offering using the Nosler 100 gr moly coated bullet.  It's been a consistant <MOA shooter from my rifle, but it's definitely on the expensive side.  The standard Remington 100 gr stuff shoots good enough, 1.5" groups on average.  I lucked into a great deal a few years back during a Kmart clearance.  I got 20 boxes of the stuff for $1 per box.  Still have some left which is why I haven't had to reload for this cartridge yet.

My Handi has only tasted one brand since its birth. It is the Federal Fusion 95gr. It will group them under an inch at 100 yards and this combo works fantastic on the whitetail here in West, TN. I have thought at times to try other types of ammo, but I can't bring myself to break up this wonderful combo that works so well. They are also $17.00 per box here.

Most 243's are of the 1:10 twist which mine is. The 100g bullet will go into a 2-3" group at 100. However the 80-87g you can cover with a nickle, we are talking Winchester loads, again this is my rifle. A 85 gr sp will take down a white tail deer, antelope and many others, at here to maybe 150 yds on running game, IMHOP.
