Recoil proof cheap scope
« on: June 13, 2007, 05:12:54 PM »
I have tried a few sights on my .45 Win Mag Contender and they don't hold up well with full loads. I am too old to be shooting irons. I am open to red dot or low power scopes. I would rather not spend $200 for a sight. Any ideas?

For the range a 45 Win. Mag. is good for (say 50 yards) a Leupold 2X scope should be sufficient and have held up for me in much more demanding applications.  You should be able to pick up a used one in good condition for about $100.

I have an older Burris 2-7x32 on my 7-30 Waters carbine barrel. I sighted it 2 years ago and haven't touched the settings since. I bought  a new Leupold 2-7x32 Rimfire for my 22LR match  carbine barrel 2 yrs  ago. and I can get  at least 3 holes out of 3 touching, sometimes all 3 in the same hole.......head shots on squirrels at 40 + yards......

Some time ago I bought  a 22 Hornet carbine  barrel from someone on this site.   I thought  I would go "low to lower medium" for a scope and bought a Simmons 8 Point 4-12x40AO.  I took it out today and shot it for the 1st time. The 1st three groups were close to POA after having it bore sighted.  I made a couple adjustments to get on the X. Group #4 was looking not too bad.  Suddenly, group #5 was not too bad, except that it had moved some 10" to the right and down 2".   There was very little response to adjustments to elevation and windage  after that.  I guess that Simmons was for the occasional shooter......20-30  rounds of 22 Hornet.......

That will teach me to look for a better name scope.
Squirrel.......the OTHER dark meat.....!

If you buy a cheap scope you can count on it failing some day.  If it fails at the range when you are tinkering that would be good.  If it fails when you have your favorite game in the crosshairs after spending lots of money and hard earned vacation, packing into the right spot for the hunt of a llifetime then you can go home with the memory of a perfect stock and no trophy.

I was in a Gander Mountain store a while ago when a customer was buying an $1100 rifle to go to Alaska for his dream hunt.  And he had a two bit set of mounts and rings on the counter, and a $40 scope.  I normally go the other way.

Good luck to you, whatever you choose.

You can pick up a Burris 1X, 2X, or 4X for the price range you have specified.  Natchez Shooting Supplies would be a good place to start.

Used Burris in 2X or 4X will do the job. I have them on 44 mag and 30-30 AI bbls, no problems

Im in the you get what you pay for croud but ive got to pass this on. Ive got a few very knowlegable buddys that swear by the simmons handgun scopes. Optics might not be up to a leupold but they claim there very rugged scopes.

You can get an Ultra-dot red-dot sight for about $100 or you can look at the Bushnell Trophy handgun scopes. I have had great success with both.  I am using them on 460 and 500 Mags.  ;D
