300 wsm opinion
« on: June 07, 2007, 03:22:46 PM »
What are your opinions of a 150 grain hornady sst balistic tip for a whitetail cartridge.  I am loading them with 67.5 grains of IMR 4350.

That's about a 3220-3250fps load according to the latest IMR guide and Hornady.  I'd use the InterBond instead, as I don't like cup-and-core bullets over 2700fps at the muzzle.

Actually, I probably wouldn't (and don't) use the IB at that speed either.  North Fork, Trophy Bonded, A-Frame, TSX, MRX get my vote.

I've had pretty good luck with Hornady's interlock bullet design in my 7mm/30 caliber mag rifles.  I haven't used the new SST bullet or loaded it for my 300WSW but I would think they would be OK.  Well good luck.

SSTs at that velocity will fragment. Better to use the interlock or better yet the interbond.

Again I would think you would be OK with the SST bullet since it is an interlock bullet.

I have loaded the 165SST to 3000 ft/sec muzzle velocity in my 300WSM with  66 grains of IMR4350 but have only shot one doe at about 275 yds.  That being a neck shot that went bang/flop.  I don't think the 150's would be that much different although I see no reason to shoot that light of bullet in this caliber.  BTW, I have also loaded the standard 165 Interlock boattail bullets with the same powder charge with the exact same POI and accuracy which is 4 shots touching at 100 yds.

I have been doing some research and I am now thinking the sst's will be loaded in the 30-06 at the low end giving about 2750 fps and using a 180 grain nosler accubond in the 300 wsm.  Any experience with the accubonds?
