Cannon Appeal?
« on: June 05, 2007, 03:07:22 PM »
I was asked the other day "why do you need a cannon?" and "why not just a muzzle loader?". I responded a cannon is a muzzle loader! Plus, I build them myself, not everyone has a cannon, each is unique, and they are just fun!

My question to everyone here is, "Why do you need a cannon?"

Cannons and mortars are just plain fun! besides not everyone has one, I got my first cannon at 17 years old and still have it 32 years later, I have bought and sold alot of guns in that time but I still have my cannon :)  Now I have 8 as I am addicted!  If someone asks why do you need a cannon, I reply why not.

I think my answer is "Because I Can".  ;D   ;D  ;D And, you get more Bang for your buck. Who knows, with the way the world is going there may come a day when we can't. But, let not think about that now.  So, buy more cannons.... Get your friends to buy a cannon and have lots cannon fun....  ;D ;D ;D

"why do you need a cannon?" and "why not just a muzzle loader?".

Guns are too expensive to shoot.

What does a new 7mm SuperDooperExtraShortMiniMaxiMag do that your old 7mm Rem Mag doesn't (besides cost more money)?  When you start with cannon, there is a whole new genre to explore before reaching saturation.

I really like the sound.  It's the sound of FREEDOM.
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

I will credit it to all of those bugs bunny/ Yosemite sam cartoons i watched as a child. Also, because I'm An AMERICAN, by God, and do not need to justify a use for one in order to own one. And for self-defense, of course. ;)

It's the intellectual enlightment.  My Degree work is in Machine Technology.  Cannons help me get a better under standing of evolution of machine technology. As a side I learn Military history, metallurgy and  chemistry.

My girlfriend ( a PHD type, Doctor of psychology) says that a cannon , (especially the field carriage type) is the ultimate phallic symbol    I guess there may be some truth in that, since it is a long cylinder that sits over two round objects. And we  always  say  that "mine is bigger that yours."  In my case Its tough to by a jock strap for 6 .

My cannon resides in the entry hall.  When the Fuller Brush man calls, he hesitates jamming his foot in the doorway.

Cannons and Mortars are a felling of expression,  such as; don't mess with me,  or perhaps, when I speak, I will be heard,  You could even say you think your toys are fun, I really get a bang out of mine.  When there's a crowd, my gun is the center of attraction.     Lots of reasons.

Bigger bang for the buck and it's more unique than your average .30 cal. bangen-boomen-eargesplitten
magnum wazoo.  ;D  Plus, there is the camaraderie of affliating with other people of the same mindset.

There is something that is just SPECIAL about shooting 6 or 7 rounds, burning a pound of powder (4.5" 7.5 pound PVC pipes full of concrete: read: 'cheap').

When I shoot the first one - the WHOLE range goes silent! ALL TEN SHOOTING POSITIONS.  Everyone walks down to MY end of the range to see what made ALL that smoke and BIG BANG - INCLUDING the three guys next to me who are Class III dealers (one put down his MP5) because I was the center of attention!

When the mortar fires there's a ring of 15' in diameter where the grass is full of smoke.

10 - 12 seconds of air-time - watching the round arch up and out - then come slamming down - ripping off branches of the trees just behind the 100 yard target line with a sharp snap!

Some folks watch in awe.  You load it up again.  Then you walk over and hand one of them the matches.  (explaining a few basic rules of safety) And you watch a previous stranger go through a life-changing experience that he'll never forget.

There are more reasons ...

remember all the cool, made-up stories told on the playground in the first grade about having heavy ordinance and other odd stuff in your dad's garage?

My kid starts kindergarden next fall. His stories won't be quite as made up....  'cept the part about the garage. I don't have a garage  ;D

I've got a list of at least 50 guys on standby that I'm supposed to call anytime I'd going to set off my Full Size Six Pounder. I told my wife that if anything ever happens to me and she needs to find a man - just start carrying around a picture of the cannon; it's a man magnet. If something happens to her, I'm supposed to carry around a puppy.
