Black bears with slugs

Really couldn't find in search. What are you using for Black Bears with a 12 ga. for ammo. Rifled slug, sabot any information or practical experiance would help. Thanks

shot a small nuisance bear 100lb., with a 20ga and buckshot. about 10 yds., one shot to the head/neck and it was finished. it was on the edge of a corn field

Any quaility slug will work just fine.  What situation are you hunting, bait, stalk, dogs? I am heading to Northern Wisconsin next week for my bear hunt.  Taking my bow and 7mm-08 Encore pistol in case they are skittish again...

I like rifled sabot slugs.  Basically anything that is a slug that you can get to group well will whack a blackie without hesitation.

At close range it might work better than a rifle. With a 12 ga. it ain't the power, it's the size of the hole.

If you have a rifled barrel then by all means us a sabot. If shooting with a smoth bore rifled slugs work just fine. Just be sure to spend some time at the range and choose the load that works the best in your gun. Our camp puts on bear drives in some nasty thick cover that the bears like so much. Quite a few guys carry slug guns includeing myself. Most of the shooting as a driver is close anyways..sort of like rabbit hunting. One thing to remember is to keep your shots within the effective range of the ammo and you will do just fine.
