45/70 Shootin High

Hey everyone.  I tried to find the search function but all I have at the top of the page is Google or GBO.  Went to the Help and I have no search function like it describes.   Must be gettin old because I thought  the old forum was easier to navigate.  Now to my question.   I remember a post from quite some time ago  about a member having problems with his Encore 45/70 shooting high with the factory iron sites.  Mine is adjusted as far as I can  and is still shooting 5 to 6 in high at 50 yards.  Groups are awesome other than that.   I think I remember something about a new front site is needed.

A "TALLER" front sight is needed. T/C has them. If your rear sight is adjusted all the way down and it is still shooting that high I would ask for the tallest front sight they make. This should put you dead on at the same distance with rear sight readjusted to somewhere in the middle. If it is too tall you can always file it down to size, but not necessarily the other way around if they send you one that is still too short.
   The taller the front sight, the more you have to point/angle the muzzle down to get it to line up with the rear sights, thus bringing your shots down. If you need it to be even taller than the replacement blade you could solder on a piece of "BRAZE ROD" to get it up there, the brass coloring also makes for easy sight pick-up due to contrasting colors.

Thanks.  That is what I remembered but wanted to be sure.  I just looked at the TC website and the only thing I could find for sites was the fiber optic for the Smoke pole and a rear aperture site.   Any after market sites you could recommend?

Also keep in mind that for all the good qualities the old 45-70 warhorse has, flat shootin' she ain't.  If you haven't already, you may want to try multiple distant targets before changing sights.  But if 50yds. is the optimum range you're looking for then you may need to change sights.  Also the range of bullet weights is quite large for this round and changing will alter the trajectory greatly.  Range estimation and knowing the trajectory become much more crucial with this round, but to me that's what makes the fun mo' better. I don't plan on using the cartridge for more than a 100 yards.    If I could just get it on paper or a little high I without holding 6 in low would be great.  More accustom of holding high  and will practice with it.  But this holding low is a PITA.  Also it probably didnt help that I was shooting at a 6 in small bore target.  But once I figured how low to hold I was getting  1 in or slightly less for groups.  Also last night I found an extra Fiber optic rear  site form TC that I use on my smoke pole and was wondering if it had more adjustment than the flip up iron site.  was going back to the range today but  2 in of rain overnight flooded the place.

Williams WGRS  peep sight is my choice for the rear. You will still need a taller front sight though. Williams has them also. The tallest fiber optic front sight from T/C should do the job.
 Another trick would be to file down the top of the rear sight until it shoots where you want it to, reblue with some cold blue and you done.

I had the same problem with my 45-70 barrel.  Called T/C and they sent me a taller front sight free of charge.

Called TC yesterday and the taller site is on the way .  Free of charge.
