Big Problem with the Handi
« on: June 16, 2007, 12:17:43 PM »
Hi All
I bought 2 handis a 45-70 and a .45Colt BC. Shot the 45 first to break it in. Was shooting 250 gr. XTP handloads(loaded at the top). I expericened no problems. Next I broke in the 45-70 with some factory Rem. 405 gr. , in 10 rounds the actoin came open on it's own 3 times. Today I took the.45 out with some expermintal loads with 300 and 360 cast bullets, NOTHING showed signs of excess pressure. I was working up to find the upper limits. In 20 rounds the action came open 6 times, damn scarey. Can anyone explain this. HELP PLZ.

Please read the Handi Basics 101 info at the top of the page and the pop open medicine link in the FAQs. ;)

Heres a short cut .  ;D

The release button should be loose when the action is closed and locked up completely. With the action open, there shouldn't be any play in the release button.

Pop opens are caused by inadequate lock up, you can check the latch engagement, instructions are in the FAQ under barrel fitting.

Make sure the underside of the barrel is clean and free of any debris that might prevent the barrel from seating in the frame properly.

Also, make sure there is no oil on the latch or latch shelf, they should be clean and dry.

Check to make sure the loaded round is fully chambered and not preventing the action from closing all the way, this could be caused by insufficient headspace due to improperly sized brass or a dirty chamber.

When new, you need to close the action with a little authority until the latch and locking shelf get used to each other, don't be afraid to close it briskly, it won't hurt it, but it will make sure it locks up good.

I had one of those in a 22-250 some time back. I called it a "speed load facilitator". Not appreciating a limited run such as this, I sold it!

Ok guys just checked the lock up. When closed button is loose, when open it's tight. I did clean the 45 after the break in session. Might have had some bore cleaner down there.

Tim and Mac have helped me so many times including the FAQ section. I had a .308 that was giving me fits I am working on it and making improvements on its groupings everytime I take it to the range. I had it going with the "speed loading facilitator" and not so great of groups with my hand loads. I found the biggest problem with my it popping open was tight cases "Not correctly sized" I reread my precision handloading reset my dies and trimmed cases to the same length/headstamp ect,,, Thanks to all the handi haulics btw I saw a Buff classis at the gun store is 460 a good price.....?

$460 is about $100 too much unless it's one of the special editions with the gold engraving on the frame. Sportsman's Warehouse sells em for $350, RR for $326.
