Starting a new project
« on: June 10, 2007, 03:43:30 PM »
Well here we go again. A little brass and a plan. Soon a grenade mortar I hope.

This is what I'm hoping it turns out like

Your trunnion stock looks a little small in diameter.

I agree the trunnion does look undersized, I prefer 80 to 100% of the bore size. However in this style of mortar the recoil is absorbed by the base and the trunnions merely hold the tube to the base.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

If the base is tightly inletted to the mortar.   ::)

Bondo epoxy gel is perfect for doing bedding... worked for me anyway.

The trunnion is 1 inch in diameter. I scaled up a picture of a tube like this and that was pretty close. With the breech being reduced in size I think it may look ok. I can always put a larger one on later if it looks funny. I intend to bed it nice and tight so the bed should take most of the recoil.
I have it bored out now

Ok the front half is complete. I flipped it around and am holding it by the bore to cut the rear section.

Brass cuts a lot faster than steel.

If those trunnions are just press fitted, be sure to leave some space underneath them in the mount so recoil isn't trying to bend them forward.

Any paint store should be able to color match that red paint.  A raw wood color base would just not be right for this mortar.

Could you post a picture of the tooling or the technique you used in cutting the beads around the bore?

If those trunnions are just press fitted, be sure to leave some space underneath them in the mount so recoil isn't trying to bend them forward.

The trunnions are one solid piece of 1 inch diameter stock and pass through the base. with a set screw holding it in place. so that with it being bedded solid in the base it should work. The Base will be a nice artillery red. Does anybody have a nice formula for that color that I can have mixed. I cut the beads free hand moving the tool like an etch-o-sketch.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Next project will be a first model King Howitzer. As soon as I save up enought for the stock.

On the contrary a true Machinist would understand and appreciate it...a Machine tool Operator would not comprend how you did it with out either code or a preformed tool.

Speaking as a real machinist, I love free handing it. Lets the creative juices flow. Nice work! Etcher sketch  so true.
