Jim Shockey's Gold-American Pioneer Powder

Just wondering what people who have used it think about it.  I have never used it before and just purchased a new bottle of the .50 caliber 50 grain sticks for $10. The price was right so I thought I would try it out in my Omega.

It's a good powder... my omega will shoot a 1.5" 100 yard group with 3 Sticks and a 250 grain bonded Shockwave. Shooting a 300 grain Nosler slug and the same powder charge the groups open up about an inch from the Shockwaves. It's very clean, very easy to deal with and if I were hunting dangerous game this is the powder I would choose because follow up shots are very easy to load; as opposed to the 777 crud ring that most people get. The bottom line is try it in your gun and see if you like it... let us know how it works out.

JSG is by far the best powder that i have ever used.  It is very clean.   My favorite load is a light one:  90 grains of JSG, a Winchester primer and a 250 grain SST bullet.  My longest muzzleloader shot was with this load:  A hog at 172 long paces:  175 yards +- 5 yards.    This load is capable of consistent 1.5 inch groups  at 100 yards.

In all honesty I've tried JSG and APP.  They both gave much cleaner results in my omega than 777 pellets.  I still got the crud ring but it took around 10 shots to develope.  I really see no difference other than a higher price for JSG.  I didn't use the sticks, I like the loose.  Both smelled about the same and cleaned with water just as easily.  JSG says no sulfur, but it seems APP is also sulferless.  Anybody else agree?

JerryKo, JSG and APP are different grades of the same product.  They are the latest refinements of Clean Shot and the charcoal-like Black Canyon.  Their base ingredient is ascorbic acid rather than sulphur.

I read somewhere the sticks are inconsistent on paper targets - mainly because of varying bore sizes. If you haven't opened the container/broken the seal, then perhaps consider the loose powder and do a store jug exchange.

I love the powder. It shoots well and seems to have more snap than the triple7 I used to shoot. Good accuracy at 100 yards in my new triumph shoots 1 to 1 and 1/2 inch groups with 240 grain bullets and a harvestor crush rib sabot.  Clean up is a breeze

I guess I'm the only one, but I didn't get good results with the APP powder. I didn't try the JSG, but the APP was very inconsistent in my Omega. I normally get sub one inch groups at 50 yards using Pyrodex pellets and 295 grain Powerbelts. The Powerbelts were flying all over the paper, and the sound it made was just 'not right'. People who were there said that big pieces of burning powder were visible going downrange. I was using the pellets, which were all different sizes. I never tried the loose APP. Never did figure out why I got such poor resluts when everything I've read about the stuff was good. Oh well, I'll stick with Pyrodex and spend a few extra minutes cleaning.

I've got consistently good results in both my Encores and my Omega using the APP JSG pellets.  Using 250 grain Shockwaves and either 100 or 150 grains of JSG pellets all my rifle shoot in the 1.5" range. It is FAR cleaner burning and FAR easier to clean than ANY other powder I've ever tried. The no mess, no fuss option is GREAT! It, of course, also has no odor when fired.  My only complaint is that they are not rounded cylinder shaped pellets to maintain their form and weight better. I've found that the shaprly squared edges of the pellets get worn quick and cheap away pretty easily when stored in tubes such as speed loaders and such. They also need better packaging then storing them in loose styrofoam bb's in a bottle.

Just last week I reshot the JSG and the Pyrodex pellets to see which my Encore Pro Hunter and Shockwaves liked the best.

I use JSG FFG loose powder with good results in My Encore and Z5............very clean powder and easy to clean up. If they made round pellets, I would use them...............
