Tim, Mac and others - ???

Can you guys give me a list of cartridges that are possible in the H&R - SB-2 that are non standard factory chamberings. I remember seeing the 405 Winchester, 45/90 and 338-06 Improved. What others are available that can be had in the H&R by either reboring or custom barrels? I already have a 219 Donaldson Wasp, 270 Ren., 22X357 Max., 30-30 Ackley Improved and 9.3X74R but like most other guys here, I think I have room in the gun safe for one or two more.

Here's a thread on the same question, those listed that Wayne's does, are bores he can do, he doesn't do the 9.3x74, but it's doable  on an SB2 frame, he just doesn't bore to 9.3mm.

Absolutely fantastic Tim, thank you very much. My 9.3X74R is a 29" octagon barrel that shoots the Speer 270 grain semi spitzer to just over 2,400 fps. and has accounted for one Colorado cow elk and a caribou from Qubec.

I should say he doesn't do the 9.3mm YET!!! :D He would if he gets enough interest to make it worth the effort and expense to tool up for it. I haven't given up on the idea yet, if the 6.5x55 Shilen barrel with a tig/mig welded underlug works out, I may just have to buy a Douglas 9.3 blank for him to build a barrel for me!! ;)

Hi Tim - for a medium to large bore cartridge, the 9.3X74R is one heck-uv-a cartridge. I think it's pretty neat to drop one of those rounds down the tube of one of these single shot barrels. There's just something about the "clunk" a cartridge nearly 3" long makes when it drops into the chamber ;). If you get a chance to get one, do so and don't look back.

I know the feeling, I have a 45-120-3¼" Sharps Straight Buffalo Classic, it's a real shock and awe cartridge!! ;D

I put my name in for a Ruger #1 in 9.3x74 when ever they show up in Canada.

For me the rifle has only looks appeal, I doubt I will ever hunt with it unless I get one of those rare cow moose licences. The ruger #1 is heavy enough to dampen down the recoil.

This is one fine looking rifle and no worry about flatten out the underlug, hah?

I know what you're saying Fred, It definitely is a beauty. It won't be that heavy , I think they state 7,5 pounds. Just curious , how much do they go for in Canada?

GOSH TIM!!! I almost shorted out my computer with all the drool from the guys here at in the office. Man, that is a good lookin rifle and one AWESOME LOOKIN CARTRIDGE!!! Can you share a couple of your loads here or if not, could you at least PM me one or two? forget everything else, first thing in the morning I WILL be in touch my gunsmith to have a barrel made for my H&R in 45-120-31/4" for sure.

Moxgrove - D and T Customs built all of my H&R's and custom barrels. I have a 250 savage Ackley Improved and 7X30 Waters being made now and should have them in my grubby little paws by the end of the month ;D.

So far I've used only published data, most from AA and Hodgdon. H4895 works good, but is position sensitive, a filler would fix that problem, but I've not tried it yet, I think a bit of toilet paper placed on top of the 60gr of powder would be in order. I've thought about using Pufflon, but that just adds cost to loading. 1800fps is easy to achieve with the 525gr Beartooth Piledriver and 555gr Saeco #20, I'm sure I could push it even more if I felt the need, but haven't yet. Those loads top out at around 30kpsi, well within the SB2 frame's capability, the brass' too, Bell brass is good for 60kpsi according to Mast, but it also costs over $2 each!! I sectioned one of em and a 500 S&W case, the Bell 45 Basic is thicker. ;)

Moxgrove - I'm going to make my 250 Savage Ackley Improved cases from 307 Winchester brass because of the case having a rim on it. By having a rim counterbore cut, I will be able to go rimmed or rimless without having to change out the extractor. Just like my 338 federal, I also use 307 winchester brass on that one too and using noslers 215 grain and sierras 225 grain bullets, this cartridge will stay under an inch at 100 yards when shot from a bench.

Tim - do you think the expense of that long case is that much better than the 9.3X74R cartridge? Not thinking ahead I never realized it would cost that much to reload for that round.

I'd want both, heck with the expense of the brass, ya only need to buy it once for as much as I shoot em!! ;D A lyman 45-120 die set is about $45 now, I paid $35 for mine 2yrs ago at Cabelas.

Talking to some of the guys here at the department, I found a set of dies that will cost me a big breakfast and one of the guys who hunts in Africa every couple of years has 15 rounds of unfired brass he'll give me in exchange for some electrical work. Sounds like I'm on the way to having myself a new barrel after all. Now my only problem is trying to figure out what I'm going to shoot with it ::). What twist rate should I have for a cartridge of this magnitude?

For the 45-120, 1:18" or 1:20" will work fine, dodd3 shoots his 45-70 BC at 600-800 meters with 500gr cast bullets. Farthest I've shot is 200yd with the 525gr Piledrivers with the Williams FP sight, I was happy to get that group with my old eyes!! I made a sight adjustment after the first "sighter" shot at the top of the bull. :D

Old eyes and iron sights - very nice shooting Tim. Speaking of old eyes, I'm afraid that's what's gonna make me have to retire from the Houston Police Department after 20+ years of service and it's gonna break my heart cause this is what I do and do best. I guess that'll allow more time with the kids and grand kids so I guess I should'nt complain too much cause I've managed to survive this long. And like my handle implies - Honker Hunter, I would rather shoot geese than anything else but I sure won't turn down a javelina, coyote, deer or most anything else that may come slipping by.

He needs a minimum order of 10-15 before tooling up to do it...He makes his barrel cutting tools by hand..His work is superb..and his cut rifle barrels are some of the best done..period.


180 grain Ballistic tip at 3050 fps..5 shots 100 yards





180 grain Accubond at 3050 fps (6 shots..1st shot low was sighter) 100 yards


All 3 grains shy of max loads from 2006 Hodgdons Annual

PS...The 180 Accubond  load works great...even on small deer 150 yards away..
