SOG Blues!
« on: May 27, 2003, 04:39:14 PM »
Hey,

I have a C&R and have bought a number of guns from quite a few suppliers and it seems like the stuff I get from SOG isn't very honestly described- or at least they don't use the NRA rating system.  I always pay the extra for "hand-pick" and if the stuff they send is hand picked, I'd sure hate to see the regular!  It seems they are consistently a grade or a little more less than they describe.  It's been so consistent, I've quit buying from them.  The last straw was some 8mm ammo I bought.  The description sounded like it was the Turkish stuff that's been around- which I didn't want!  So I called and asked a salesman.  He claimed it was not Turk and was NON-CORROSIVE to boot.  Well, when I recieved my good deal non corrosive, not turk 8mm ammo- guess what???  Yeah, it WAS the Turk stuff!  And they are STILL advertising this stuff as NON Corrosive!  Yeah, right!  Just to be sure I tested it.  What do you know??  It's corrosive as all git out!  So buyer beware!  Just my opinion...

I bought from SOG a few times they had unissued 49/56's and its exactly what they were rearsenaled and stored for many years.  When everyone had Turk mausers $39 and they started selling all of a sudden they had a few conditions and the prices changed now I'm willing to beat the $59 Turk mauser is the same as the $39 one I have(condition).  I also think as we hit the bottom of the barrel on these guns the conditions will get worse and prices stay the same or go up too.  But right now after my last experience with another dealer I was sent an incomplete gun and it was advertised as Very Good condition and said nothing about missing parts and another one in the same order had two cracks in the stock and was advertised as the same condition "very good"  so believe me your not alone.  Sometimes we do good and sometimes we don't but the good does out weigh the bad I think its a crap shoot no matter who we buy from but AIM SURPLUS,  CENTURY ARMS and SOG have been good and the best so far has been SAMCO GLOBAL ARMS I ordered a gun and they got back to about the condition and asked me if I still wanted it after they told me "exactly what condition it was in" I thought up front that was great so I recieved no surprises and it was in better condition than I expected to recieve.  I haven't delt with Empire arms yet but I heard that Dennis under rates his guns conditions so he is sure you will be happy and after what I just went thru that sounds good to me too. Now as far as surplus ammo I TRUST no one saying its non corrosive I do the same cleaning everytime no matter what.  Funny when I first started using corrosive ammo and heard what others said(scary) about cleaning the barrels I pictured in my mind dump trucks of salt coming out of my barrel then I found out its in the primer so how much salt can be in that little primer??  All I ever do is wash the barrel out with wet patches soaked in solvent(G.I.Rifle bore cleaner) till they are coming squeeky out clean then run a dry patch thru, then oil the bore.  I have never had a barrel go bad in 25 years of using corrosive ammo so I guess I must be doing something right.   But if I ordered 8MM of another brand and they sent me turk I'd be pissed too. I heard that someone is selling turk ammo as less corrosive too?? Did they pop out the primers and change them? I don't think so.  I just recieved Greek 8MM ammo from century I think it was 700rds for $37.50 and I'm sure its corrosive at that price but it has to be more mild than the hot turk I hope I bought it for the Hakim.     BigBill

Folks, I treat all surplus ammo as corrosive!
"Shoot it - Clean it"

There are many modern ammo companies that
still have mildly corrosive primers!
Wolf brand will put a patina of rust in your bore
real quick, (especially if you live in a humid
climate) and it is current production!
There is another brand also, but I can't think of the
name. The headstamp has nny on it, and you might
as well be shooting Black Powder!

personally, I don't mind the corrosive primers!
They are normally full power loads, they are cheap,
they have a longer "Shelf Life" than Non-Corrosive,
they are normally accurate and in reality it does not
take that long to clean up their mess.

Corrosive surplus ammo, is Wolf corrosive?
Thanks to BigBill on showing me the "Gunsamerica" site for getting prices on my Russian SkS, this will help alot in time savings, plus it is entertaining to look at the photos of guns, just like a gunshow!

I learned to shoot with black powder muzzleloaders and cap and ball Colts.  So cleaning a Mauser barrel out at the end of the day of shooting, first with black powder cleaner, then Hoppes #9, after running corrosive surplus ammo through it at the range has worked well the last 20 years for me, no corrosion damage that I have ever seen.

I bought 4 packs of 70 rnd bandoleers of Turkish 8 MM ammo this Winter and fired to date 15 rounds, I thought it shot well in my Yugo M-48.  However, I had to use more force than usual to chamber each round into the rifle.  When I went back to the guy I bought it from to get more after the sample amount, he seemed surprised that I wanted to buy out what he had!  Is the Turkish 8 MM bad in general?

The nice thing about shooting corrosive ammo in bolt actions is the easy cleanup.  I think it might be a hassle in a semi-auto.  Years ago I used corrosive ammo in my Chinese SKS, and had to remove the gas assembly each time to clean out the residue when I got home.  The gas assembly housing eventually becomes loose in contact with the barrel attachment, I have seen this with other SKS's too.  At least with the AK-47 the whole assembly (bolt and and gas piston) comes out as a singular unit, so that a cleaning rod with patch can get into the gas tube without having to remove the gas piston channel cover.

Is the Wolf brand of ammo corrosive?  I thought it wasn't.  If it is this could really limit me as I would prefer Sellier and Bellot Czech brand but cannot buy the better Sellier and Bellot, why is that stuff hard to find?  I have some in stock but have been reluctant to fire it off.

Thanks y'all for the replies!  Yes, I also treat any surplus as corrosive and I know it's really not all bad- and as some have pointed out it's better for stocking up on.  What gets me is the fact they advertised AND even told me on the phone NON corrosive...  Some mumbo-jumbo about German priming and no it's not corr.  I bought it as advertised and they basically lied about it.  I suppose I could send it back but the freight would be more than the ammo is worth.  The REAL reason I didn't want the Turk stuff is it kicks like a mule!!!  I really can't believe anything with a 150 gr bullet can be that hot and still be anywhere close to SAMI spec (I believe 50,000psi).  I have a ton of it I had bought a year or so ago and my neighbor and I pull the bullets and reload them with 10 grains less of the same powder.  I haven't chrono'd them but they kick about the same as the Bulgarian we got from InterArms.
By the way, I've been cleaning with a patch damp with ammonia/water then 2 wet patches, dry and oil.  About the same amount of work but it's an alternitave when I can't find my old GI bore cleaner.  Again, thanks!!  Good shootin!
