223 cal bullet wieght
« on: June 17, 2007, 08:21:34 AM »
My rifle(the 223 ultra light youth model SB2)came with  a notice that stated "Some 223 rem ammunition uses bullets heaver than 55 grains. This rifle has a rifling twist of 1:12 which in not designed to properly stabilize bullets greater than 55grains in weight.  These bullets will not provide the same level of accuracy as  bullets weighing 55 grains or less."  What has been your experience with 223 bullet weights greater than 55 Grain?

Exactly that, bullets that weigh 40-55gr shoot best, even in the 1:9" twist barrels. There are a few exceptions, the 64gr Win PP bullets and ammo both shoot acceptable by most that have tried them, the 63gr Sierra Varminter  is another that is made for 1:12" twist barrels and has been tried with success. The 60gr Vmax and a couple 68gr-70gr bullets have been found to shoot ok by a couple shooters, but in general, stick with the lighter bullets and you'll be happy.

thanks, I have pretty much only shot 55 grain bullets at the range, but was considering using a heavier bullet for my disabled wife to use deer hunting.  The past two years she has been using my 357mag marlin but the hunt ranges are a little long for the 357mag.  I have a 243 barrel also but it has a little too much recoil.   Which is how I found this site seeking info on how to reduce the recoil on the 243.  Lots of info on this Site.

The 60gr Nosler partition would be a good one to try for that purpose, as well as the 64gr Win PP in the .223. ;)

That 60 grain partition sounds like a great round.  I wouldn't be a bit scared to shoot a deer with that load.  Alot of calculations show that a 223 isn't adequate, but unfortunately I know of numerous deer that have been poached with a 22lr, and they were just as dead as any other.
