Powder - Handi - .223 - .270
« on: May 29, 2007, 06:18:07 PM »
I have a .223 and a .270, I am NEW to reloading, Just got a Lee Aniversary kit. Since the folks on this forum are some of the best I have seen on the net Period. I'm asking here :) If you had to buy One Powder (Very small budget left) for each of these calibers. What would it be ?

The .270 will be 130 - 150 grain "Deer" Dun
The .223 a Predator Gun

Can't say for the 223...but I can for the 270...IMR4350..Winchester cases..Winchester LR primers...other powders may give more speed...but few will match the consistency of the IMR 4350

I have excellent results with Varget in my 223s and ...as Mac said... 4350 in my 270.
Though I have had good results as well with 4831 too.

H4895 and 55 gr NBT for the little gun
H4831 with just about any 270 bullet weight.  I have loaded some 110 VMAX varmint bullets that are easy on the shoulder.  The current load in my Win M70 is with 150 Hornady SP.  It seems to be a versatile powder.

H4895 can be used in many, many calibers.  If I only had one powder for multiple calibers it would be H4895 now.  Varget is a close second.

for the 223 i use 24.5 grns of h322 with a 50 grn V-max, it meters great and far surpasses any other powders i have tried in mine. as they say your milage may vary.

While I do not load for the 270, several loading manuals I have list IMR 4831 as the most consistent powder. The 223 is another matter. I have had very good results from VIHT N-133, but I know that others have used H 322, H 335, Varget, BLC-2, W 748, IMR 4895 among others with good results. Every loading manual I have give different powders as "best" or list no results at all ( because there is no clear "best"). It depends the bullet being used, twist rate and the quirks of your rifle. I think I would try Varget for the heavier bullets (55+) and H 322 for lighter bullets(<55) with WW cases and REM 7 1/2 primers to start with. The 223 is very versatile and results will vary widely( that is why it difficult to give a clear, straight answer) You are going to get a lot of answers for the 223, it does well with a wide variety of powders and bullet combinations. When shooting in a Handy rifle keep the pressures low to medium and bullets seated to SAAMI OAL (can't reach the lands any way) for best over all results no matter which powder you decide to try.

H4831SC and hornady 150gr sp. Dime sized gruops from a Ultra.
26gr of Varget for the 55gr FMJ and 24gr for the Hornady 75gr HPBT both shoot sub MOA at 100&150 yds from my 1-9 twist 223.
Good luck!

.270 - IMR-4350 or Varget

Enjoy the rewards of handloading and be safe!

I've never reloaded for the 223, still have a lot of WWB, but here's a thread on the same topic at PM for the 223...

IMR4350 gets my vote for the 270, it's worked best for me with 150gr partitions. It seems to be real popular at Handloads too.

One powder then use  4895  (either IMR or H they are both owned by the hodgon I doubt if there is any real difference any more) it will work well in both the 223 and the 270. I have loaded both cartridges with this and had good results. I will not give you a load just get a good manual that shows 4895 powder and you will be good to go.

For .223 I use Varget and X-Terminator. Xterm is definitely easier to throw charges with. 22.5gr xterm or 26gr Varget and I use 50gr bullets.

I got to throw my .02 in here , for the 223 , i like IMR 4895 and for the 270 go with IMR 4350 , but if you can get only one powder to start , get H4895 . Granted it is not the BEST powder for both rounds , BUT it will work for both in a pinch .  ;) with exceptable results .

Does anyone else have problems throwing charges/dispensing charges with Varget?  My RCBS measure and scale seem to have more trouble with Varget than H4895, H4831, or spherical powders.  Spherical ones I would hope to be easier to measure.

Not to hijack your thread, just thinking that how my blood pressure gets up when I measure Varget, especially into those little 223 cases.

223 AA2230
270 H4831sc

Like others, here's my 2 cents worth....I have been using IMR 3031 and if I do my part I can put put 5 shots inside a dime with room to spare at 100 yrds.  Course thats off a rest and I have a Nikon 4.5-14AO on the 24" bull.   Heavy but love to shoot it.
