Some have had some issues with them, but not mine. So far I've only used black powder and lead cast (1-20) bullets in mine and am very happy with it. Be sure you slug the bore, as most likely bullets in the .379-.380 range will be the most accurate.
I've only shot a few diff loads in mine and it has liked all but one. That was with a 335gr Snover bullet, and I suspect it's too long for the rifling to stabilize. The other loads are with Chey-cast .380 245gr lead bullets, and GOEX powder.
I'm in the process of adding a Dixie scope (circa 1890 type) to mine so load development has been put on hold for a bit.
I say get one and slug the bore and go from there. Recoil with the BP loads are like a 30-30 or less. The 38-55 can be REALLY loaded up, especially in the Handi, as it would have no problem handling loads in the 375 Win class, just make sure you use a low load level and work up from there, watching the brass at all times.
You could even use 375 Win brass, it's thicker. I use some pretty hot loads in my Winchester BB 94 in 375, but am using 38-55 brass to do it. No isues with the thinner brass as yet and I do not expect any from the looks of it.
Also at those speeds you'll need a gas check lead bullet, or jacketed. Jacketed bullets in the right dia are hard to find, maybe the Barnes original 255gr?
