Want something in 38-55
« on: July 23, 2007, 02:45:35 PM »
Hi there, I'm new to GBO and looking for some advice.
For some unknown reason other than I don't have one, I just got to get something in 38-55.
What is your opinion of the H&R 38-55 Target rifle.  I have had 2 previous Handi's, one in 45-70 synthetic (too much recoil got rid of it for a guide gun) and one in 308 which never would do better than 2" groups (sold it to get a pro-hunter).  How is the H&R or should I save up for something else.

Thanks Carroll

Some have had some issues with them, but not mine.  So far I've only used black powder and lead cast (1-20) bullets in mine and am very happy with it.  Be sure you slug the bore, as most likely bullets in the .379-.380 range will be the most accurate.

I've only shot a few diff loads in mine and it has liked all but one.  That was with a 335gr Snover bullet, and I suspect it's too long for the rifling to stabilize.  The other loads are with Chey-cast .380 245gr lead bullets, and GOEX powder.

I'm in the process of adding a Dixie scope (circa 1890 type) to mine so load development has been put on hold for a bit.

I say get one and slug the bore and go from there.  Recoil with the BP loads are like a 30-30 or less.  The 38-55 can be REALLY loaded up, especially in the Handi, as it would have no problem handling loads in the 375 Win class, just make sure you use a low load level and work up from there, watching the brass at all times.

You could even use 375 Win brass, it's thicker.  I use some pretty hot loads in my Winchester BB 94 in 375, but am using 38-55 brass to do it.  No isues with the thinner brass as yet and I do not expect any from the looks of it.

Also at those speeds you'll need a gas check lead bullet, or jacketed.  Jacketed bullets in the right dia are hard to find, maybe the Barnes original 255gr?

Handirifle, have you tried the .378 from Custom Bullets?

Nope, just the chey-cast.   It's been a bit since I shot it.  I'm still getting the Dixie scope setup and all sights have been removed to do so.  I'd venture to say, that IF the bullets are .379 and are 1-20 or better a 1-30 mix then most likely they'll work.

I still think it's better to have groove size or larger and the smaller they are, the softer they need to be.

.378 diameter
This jacketed flat nose bullet was developed specifically for shooters of the modern Marlin Cowboy rifles in .38-55 caliber. Its soft, pure copper jacket makes it suitable for moderate use in "Smokeless Steel" marked original guns with .377-.379 groove diameters as well. It features a cannelure for crimping that is located in the correct position for cartridge overall length. It makes a fine bullet for those loading high velocity hunting ammunition in .38-55. Weight can be whatever is desired ranging from from 230-250 grains.

Sorry, didn't even look at the link, yes they are jacketed and they claim to be just the ticket for warm and up loads for the 38-55.  Looks like they would be worth a try for sure.
