6.5 x55 load on deer
« on: November 08, 2004, 09:03:43 AM »
Guys I bought a as new Savage 110 with a 3x9 Bushnell from a buddy of mine for 250, and a bottle of pepsi. I took off the 30/06 barrel and ordered a 6.5 x 55 barrel for it. I took it to the range day before yesterday, to try it out. I loaded 140gr sierra gamekings in it. The accuracy was scary. One ragged whole in the center of the bull at 50 and the whole didn't open up at a 100. I am going on a cull hunt in central TX in about two weeks. I am told that the 140s are too heavy for these dear and that I should move to the 120 gameking or the noslers. Any help here guys would be appreciated. I am taking more than one gun just wanted your in put

140s are not too heavy, but they will blow through and leave a good blood trail. The gamekings expand quickly, and have a reputation for ruining a lot of meat. I havne't shot them personally on deer, but on large hogs they penetrated the shoulder and then did massive damage inside.

In a factory load I would shoot the Rem corelokts or the Hornady LM if you want more umph and range. Both will do a number on whitetails.

My pet handload for deer is the 129 grain Hornady interlock with 36 grains AXMR-2495. Haven't yet shot a deer with these but I love the performance of the interlock on water bottles and into a sand/clay backstop. Accuracy is as good as I have gotten from any handloads.

Sounds like you have a first-class whitetail rig, alright. Happy culling! 8)

The 6.5X5 is a wonderful deer round. As you are seeing, it is also quite accurate. I've been using it for some time now with great success. The 140 grain Nosler Partitions do a great job on the whitetails around here. I' don't have any experience with the Sierra Gamekings, but remington 140 grain Corelocks are good deer bullets in the Swede. I load them for a hunting buddy, and he swears by them. I use the 125 grain Nosler Partitions: pure whitetail poison. I'll bet the Sierras will do just fine. I like the idea of two holes. Good huntin'.

jc,

The 129g Hornady is a fine bullet for the 6.5x55. Remember, the .270 Win. shoots a 130g.

Thanks for the input guys. I feel very confident with the rifle. I have shot seveal deer with a gameking in my 25/06 and they have all been dead where they stood. They did twictch alittle however. I think that shot pacement has alot to do with the meat damage. I have shot 2 in the spine and my dad shot had a shoulder shot with his balistic tips. different calibers but his off shoulder looked like blood soup. I think every one should do the West Texas Heart Shot, lol. Then you don't have to clean them as much. just a joke guys

JC,

The wife used 46.8 gr. of IMR-4831 for 2,841 fps. behind a Barnes 120 gr. TSX this year in her Swede for deer.  Worked great as she collected 2 nice bucks, one shot each.  Lawdog

Thanks Lawdog,
I want my wife to get into it as well and I think this would be a great caliber for her to start out on. My son will probably shoot it when he finally goes to the range with me.

Sierra's 85 grain hollow point with 42 grains IMR 4064 made a very good round for my daughters who are recoil sensitive. Kicks even less than the 120-140 grains, and is very accurate. Is good medicine for deer out to 200 yards, too. I would recommend it for a beginning hunter or female who doesn't like recoil so much.

The Swede is really limited when you are stuck with factory ammo. Reloading makes it a much more versatile gun from varmints up to moose and elk. The Swede is what got me into reloading, and I haven't regretted it one bit.

Yes, but I have only worked up one load so far because these are heavier bullets than I need to hunt Texas whitetails and hogs. I used AXMR 2495 and found the best load for accuracy was 34.8 grains. Very accurate with less than 1" three-shot groups at 100 yards. Supposed to be producing a little over 2400 fps, but I don't have a chronograph to verify that.

Well since my last post I have had to replace the scope on my little swede. I had a pld bushnell 3x9 on it and went with my  4x12 elite 3000. I am now half inch high at one hundred. Would it not be AWESOME to have a ruger #1 RSI in the 6.5x55. Let us croos our fingers hoping for the stars to magicly align.

Just got back from a Whitetail hunt in South Dakota.  Shot a 4+4 at 125yds running quartering away in the woods.  Hit him in the engine room and he dropped 10 feet from where he was shot.  Just hammered him.  I don't know what it is about this caliber but it really seems to have the knock down power that people talk about it.  My new Whitetail fun gun to carry, T3 Walnut/Blue Tikka and a Weaver Grand Slam 3-9.

I load the 160 Hornady's
Our shots are in thick bush with not too many shots beyond 150 yards.
Shot a big doe through the lungs at about a hundred yards. She sat down and then rolled over dead.
The bullet seemed to have expanded  well , did it job and did exited the other side without blowing out a hole the size of your hand.

Update on my pet load mentioned above (129 gr Hornady interlock in front of 36 grains AXMR 2495). Collected my first deer with this load on 12/1, a 110# field dressed 3.5 year-old 10 point buck. Shot was quartering forward at 100 yards. Aimed just past shoulder in an attempt to ruin less meat, bullet hit about an inch further left than where I was aiming because he turned away just as I fired. With the angle this meant the bullet penetrated at about a 45 degree angle through the rear 1/3 of the rib cage, slicing rearward through the diaphragm about 2 inches below the spine, and exited the opposite flank right at the front edge of the ham. Left about a dime-sized exit hole with very little blood leakage.

Needless to say, not the best shot placement, but the result was remarkable. Dissection later revealed an intact heart, both lungs, and liver, no damage to the digestive tract, and no spinal injury. There was a good amount of blood in the chest cavity, though. The only thing I can figure is that the rearmost section of the aorta and/or vena cava just before the diaphragm must have been ruptured.

Despite no major organ hits and no spinal injury, the buck went straight down upon being hit. Four or five seconds later he jumped up and turned 180 degrees around and fell immediately in a heap only about 5 feet from where he first went down. After waiting five minutes with no movement I approached and he was stone dead.

Last year I shot a good-sized buck in the same area of the rear chest cavity, rupturing part of the liver and no other organs (very similar damage to this year's buck) with a 130 grain .270 bullet. That buck ran about 130 yards before piling up. There does seem to be something about the bullet weight/velocity combo of the Swede that seems to put them down, at least so far in my limited experience.

The wife used 42.2 gr. IMR-4320 for 2,835 fps. with a 120 gr. Barnes TSX in here Swede this year for all her deer hunting.  Also worked on Wild Hogs and accurate too.  Lawdog

i have a couple...
120gr nosler bt and 44 gr 4350 give 2750fps out of my swed and outstanding accuracy.
120gr sierra are a little less accurate...but also very nice..
140gr hornady interlocs and 42.5 gr 4350 gives 2600fps...and duplicates factory loads.
same load and a 140gr sierra gameking..do like wise..but accuracey is better..
140gr barnes x bullets give good accuracy and with 41 gr 4350 go 2560fps..
have not tried triple shocks or xlcs yet..but i would suspect more velocity and good accuracy...
how do they perform?
120gr bt will go in about 10 inches..never had one exit..but damage to the chest cavity is devistating
140gr sierra and hornady's perform like most cup and core bullets...good expansion and complete penetration
140gr barnes x bullets give good damage..not as "shocking" as others..but they will go through more than you could imagine...
I shot a doe last year with one...it went in her chest head on...and came OUT of her ham...meat damage was not bad..but it cut a hole all the way through....i would not hesitate to shoot an elk at under 200 yds with one..with THAT bullet...unreal penetration...
the swed has moderate vel and good penetration with a 140gr...and to me is the best weight..even though my gun shoots 120gr bt very well..i am leaning to the 140gr because i like a good blood trail if i don't make a perfect shot....

To date my most accurate load is 47 H-4350 @ 3.050 with 140 Sirrra Game King's.  I've yet to recover a bullet. (This load is for modern arms only)  To be honest the 6.5X55 is a little overkill for white tail deer.

That seems to be a bit hot as my Hornady(1997) data shows 45 gr. going 2708.
I tryed 46gr and see pressure signs in my rifle.I have the swede model 38  which seems to be a lot stronger than the model 96.
The point is - we should start 10% lower and work our way up on some of these loads

the 6.5x55 is a dandy deer round. i prefer the 140 gr bullets.

as to strength questions above, the m96 and m38 are the exact same action-neither is weaker than the other, just different length barrel. its not a good idea to hotrod the old swedes though.

I started out with 44gr's of H-4350 and moved on up to 47 gr's.  No real signs of excess pressure except an occasional flat primer on a real hot Texas day.  I'm convinced the CZ 550 is the strongest action going and don't worry about it.

Well I do not agree with you, My model 38 built in '42 will handle loads that will make my 1915 model 96 lock up where I can not open the bolt with out great effort.
If you can get the Husq. instead of the Carl G. your getting a stronger rifle. there is indeed better metal . Both rifles were checked out by a smith as being good. I sold the model 96.
I researched the rifles on the Web and got a bit of history and spec 's on the rifles from oversea's

The 6.5 Swede is zipping along on a flat trajectory and under 200 yards if you shoot a deer in the shoulder with a GameKing or any similar soft point as posted will ruin alot of meat. The 6.5's as a group are all fairly high performance rounds - so a word to the wise is to make sure of your shot placement.
