Gonna buy a used Marlin 60 or maybe a Mossberg
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:32:08 PM »
Been with out a 22 rifle for a while time to get another. I want a semi auto for plinking so gonna look for a Marlin 60 or a Mossberg semi auto if I can find one of those in a tube feed. either one will work for me. No I do not want a Ruger or a Savage. The Savage guns are prone to going semi auto and jamming and I have had enough Rugers in my lifetime I want something different. I know both the Marlin and the Mossbergs are accurate and work well. Went to the gunshop tonite their 22 rack is pretty bare time to call around and see what else is out there locally.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

If you're looking at new rifles...I would humbly suggest you go with the Marlin either in a model 60 (tube fed) or a model 795 (clip)
At Wally World there is only a few bucks difference between the Mossy and the Marlin 60.
The Mossy is produced overseas somewhere (Philipines ?) and I have heard some complaints about accuracy, function and quality.
By staying with Marlin...you will be getting PROVEN accuracy.
If you opt for the Marlin 7000, you will get a little rifle that in my personal experience, will likely out shoot most "tricked-out" 10/22s..

             www.marlinfirearms.com

   Whoops ! I looked at the Marlin website..no 7000 ? What happened guys ?

Well, the 795PSS "papoose" is still available..if you want a breakdown .22 that probably shoots like an "average" .22 rifle...

That's right !...You did say "used"..some of the older Mossys are very desireable,  #351 or #352K..parts are becoming scarce however..

I found a used Glenfield 60 in really good shape. It needed cleaning as the bolt was sticky and I was getting some misfires, I think the fireing pin was gummy along with the bolt. A good cleaning job took care of the problem. I like older guns and I still would buy a mossy if I found one and I had the cash available. For now I think I got a good deal with this Glenfield for 80 bucks. The metal and wood are in excellent shape I do not think it was used much. I looked it up by the serial number and it is a 1981 model with the squirrels and oak leaves on the stock.

Old Mossbergs can be accurate.  Problem is they can be very heavy, look goofy and are expensive as all get out. I was given a 144LSA target rifle from an estate.  It's in pristine condition and is very accurate from a rest. Has fancy target sights, 26" heavy barrel and quick release sling swivels for an uncommon narrow sling.
Two things I don't like about it.
#1 is it weighs 8 pounds, much of it forward because of the long heavy barrel.  Too much weight for an old 67 year old geezer like me to shoot off hand for a 40 shot silhouette match.
#2 is it uses clips. I hate clips. I only have one 7 shot original clip. Spare original clips or aftermarket 10 shot ones go for at least $25 a pop, most are around $35. I have a special place for it in my closet.

I saw several older Mossbergs this weekend at a gun show, and was impressed.  Trouble is the price with the cheapest at $240.  The stock looked like it had been dragged around the parking lot behind a car.  They do look substantial though.

The marlin model 60 is the best bet, easy to get replacement parts for, and at a reasonable price, the older mossbergs are tough to get parts for and clips are almost extinct, haven't heard to much bout the 702 haven't new at Walmart are 98.00

Our wally world quit selling guns  >:( That may be good news for some as I have heard some complain about wallyworld putting the mom and pop buisnesses out of business. Still I liked their prices and their closeout prices on items after hunting seasons and fishing seasons. You can get some good bargains if you hit the store at the right time.

Yes.  Marlin offers several .22 Magnums.  Check out their web site Marlin Firearms.com.  IIRC,  Wal mart sells the 925M new for around $169.  You may also want to check local gun/pawn shops and gun shows.  I regularly see decent used models for just over $100.  :)

I think you'll like the Marlin. Mine still shoots well (I turned 12 in 1981 and have the exact same one as you just got)
I don't use it too much anymore and considered sending you a message about possibly buying mine, but then I remembered all the fun and all the WI squirrels that have hit the forest floor....I couldn't do it anyway   :'(

No matter how many guns we get and love, it's still fun to break out a classic .22  ;)

Never sell your first guns I made that mistake and I have regretted it ever since some 35 years later.  :(

I was at our local Wally World yesterday and perused their catalog, which looked to be brand new.

I was very surprised to see the Marlin 7000 listed..a very accurate little rifle. I had one that I gave to my grandson. It would out shoot some pretty high priced competition, along with out shooting tricked out 10/22s I have built !

Charles..if you want light..check out the Marlin 795..this is the 7000 semi-auto (same action as #60), but with a light barrel .

I found on my Marlin semi-autos that the trigger improves greatly with use. My models 60 & 7000 had much smoother triggers after 500 rounds or so.
