510 yard PD kill with a .223 HR
« on: June 14, 2007, 03:32:01 PM »
Last weekend I went out with 5 other guys and we killed over 700 prairie dogs in four fields all in under 6 hours.

The last field we shot from the center out. It was 510 yards to the outside of the field. All 6 of us were making kills at that distance.

One of the guys was a custom rifle builder. I was a bit surprised to see him pull out a .223 HR. He liked to use it for the 100-200 yard shots while his other guns were cooling down.

I decided 2 things. #1, The HR is getting 3 more .223 barrels fitted to it this winter. That way I always have a cool barrel. #2, I am looking for a Remington 700 action to send to Lee Jurras. I am going to have him build me a custom rifle on that action. Oh, one more thing. I LOVE KILLING PRAIRIE DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

I wish we had dogs in PA.  :(

Groundhog supply is getting thin around here.  I'm about to self impose a memorandum on exploding my favorite prey to let them build up.

I don't hunt in PA & can't say what is happening there, but consider the Coyote. Coyotes have put the hurt on Groundhogs in AR, that doesn't mean it is true in PA, but if you now have more Coyotes, they will kill more Ground Hogs than you ever will. If this is happening, your backing off of the killing will have no effect. Kill Coyotes at every legal opportunity!!!
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

We were set up at the center of the pivot and shooting out beyond the edge of the field. It was impressive shooting.

Be careful what you wish for. These dogs are destroying crops. I have seen entire corn fields destroyed by these little pests. Some of the farmers out here are begging guys to come shoot them.
