Hi guys, new here although I've been reading for years. I was kinda surprised actually when I tried to log in and got "user name does not exist."

Anyways, name's Ron, am a Chief in the Navy and am kinda partial to the 41 Rem mag. I am also a bit of a wildcatter (more armchair than practice but have made a few.) I have posted my idea for a 97 Spanish Mauser on another forum and realized that the same thing might work with a 307 case. My idea is basically to build a 41-308. I plan on using the LBT 250 grn WFN and would like to get 2200fps or so.

I have a couple questions.

If I bought a handy and had it rebored to the cartridge on a 307 case could I use the same die as the 308 case with (of course,) the different shell holder?

Does the 307 and 30-30 use the same shell holder? ( or I guess I could ask "can I buy a 30-30 handi barrel, have it rebored to 41 and run my reamer in it or will I need to get two reamers?")

The first gun I ever shot was dad's 20 guage topper. I've wanted a handi for a while and am gonna get one here real soon.

Quickdtoo, the moderator of this forum, has rechambered a Handi to the 405 Winchester.  The 405 Winchester, with reduced loads, could use the bullet you describe just fine I believe and with the same ballistics. Ken Waters did just that with .41 cal pistol bullets years ago.   These days, 405 Winchester brass ought to be easier to get than 307.  I know using standard brass takes some of the fun out of wildcatting, but at least your load would be non-standard. 

The 307 and 3030 do not, I believe, use the same shell holder.  308 dies would try to squeeze your 41-307 back to 308 diameter.

Welcome aboard noyb72!! Xhare took the words right out of my mouth....er....keyboard!!!  ;D  My 405 is a rechambered/rebored 38-55 Target with the 28" barrel, shoots very well with 300gr Hornady SPs at a little over 2400fps. I have some .412" 265gr Beartooth WLNGC cast bullets I want to load up, but haven't done it yet. 405 dies and brass are readily available, bullet selection is somewhat limited, but are available.

My favorite caliber is also the 41.  I shoot the 414 Supermag, 41 Remington Magnum and the 41 Special.  Of course, none of these are Handi's so not much discussion here.  Shoot the 414 SM in TC Encore, 3 revolvers in 41 Mag that I use almost all 41 Special (very, very accurate round).

Anyway, how about a 414 SM Handi?  Rimmed cartridge, ballistics would be close to the 41-308 (maybe, haven't checked), brass would be hard to find.  Starline had some a couple years ago, should have bought more then.

Don't know from memory, what is bore diameter of 405 Winchester?

Thanks for your replies.

I like the 405 idea but that would mean another set of dies, and different load developement. If I could use the same die for both the rimmed and unrimmed version of my cartridge (AKA 45 ACP/45 auto rim) and could find a load both rifles liked then it would be nothing but changing the shellholder to load both rounds. My question is weather or not 307 brass is close enough to 308 brass to work, or do they just have similar capacities.

As added incentive for the 405, Hornady offers cheap bullets as a form of rebate for buying their die sets, I've "cashed" in on their offer several times!! ;D

Wow, I'm lazy.

It never occurred to me to google the case drawings.

Tim you have made me a happy man!

In order for the .411 to work on this case the shoulder needs to be bumped to .458. I always thought the 308 and 30-06 had the same shoulder width, obviously I was wrong. Going from .454-.458 shouldn't be a big deal at all. I think I'll have to set the barrel back a turn on the Mauser and start with something like a .223 for the handy because I don't think the .004 would be enough to clean up the chamber. It would be nice if I could just run a .410 neck reamer into a .308 chamber but I will bump the shoulder up just to be sure. I also don't know what the chamber would look like after the rebore.

Been doing some research.

Any thing done on the case designed for the model 94 BB will fit a 308 except for the shell holder. Some dies are actually listed as .356/.358 or .307/.308. And, they do use the 30-30 shell holder. With this information I think a 30-30 barrel would be where I would start. If I had the barrel rebored to .410 and then ran a 308 reamer in, which wouldn't be to difficult considering the material had been removed for the 30-30. Then finished with a 410 neck reamer, I'd be in business. The plan would be the same for the Mauser. I might actually use the 308 AI die in order to have a sharper shoulder to headspace on.

I am really excited to get this started and will start when I get home next week.
