Any thoughts on the Savage Scout rifles?
« on: July 16, 2007, 03:08:44 AM »
I just saw one of these on the shelf for the first time this last weekend.  I was very impressed that Savage is is going to offering a scout rifle with detachable magazine and peep sights.  If was in 30-06 I would have bought it without a second thought.

Anybody have one of these or know somebody that does?

I had one for a couple of years, and loved it.  Traded it when something came along that I couldn't live without...a real Steyr Scout.  Honestly, I don't regret getting the Steyr, it's something I wanted to experiment with for a long while, but in terms of value-for-money, the Savage had it beat hands down.  Very accurate with lots of factory loads, excellent iron sights, good feel and handling.  The factory stock was a bit flexible and needed some improvement in that area, but otherwise no complaints.  The scout scope idea seemed strange at first, but quickly became very comfortable.  I used a Leupold scout scope on it, and was happy enough with that arrangement that the same scope is now on my Steyr.  The Savage allows the use of a Harris bipod or any other you like, far superior to the Austrian version.  Plus, the new version has the Accutrigger...a definite improvement over my older gun.

Bottom line...I'll probably finish playing with the Steyr, get my money back out of it, get a new Savage, and keep it forever.

The one I saw was a 308 somewhere between 500 to 550.  A little pricey for a Savage, but then again that's the most expensive gun store in town.

It looks like Savage had them listed in the catalog as model 10FCM, and now has replaced the "Scout" with a model 10FCM "Sierra" that has no open sights and no forward-mounted scope base. Am I missing something?

In their 2007 catalog they have a picture on page 24 of a 10FMC scout rifle with a scope on it.  It also has the front and rear sights and a greenish looking stock.  It's got a detachable box magazine too.  If they had this rifle in 30-06 I would have bought one and hidden it from my wife by now.  It's one sweet looking rifle!

teddy12b- It's been a looooong time since I looked through an actual printed/paper gun catalog. I should have been more specific: there is no current listing for the "Scout" model on Savage's web site, just the "Sierra." I just now downloaded the full 2007 catalog, and there-- on page 24 (like you said)-- it was. Thanks for the info.

It gets really confusing I know.  I see the new rifle in their catalog, but not their website.  Savage's website never updates early in a new year and their catalogs aren't exactly ready with the new years also.  It's kind of frustrates me because I am definitely part of the savage herd and I would love to buy one of these but it's hard to get current information from their website anymore.
