Their neat for what their intentions are but nothing for me.  I just like he longer bbls that's all.  I do like the gription on the front of the gripframe.  the SBH hammer is a plus also.

IŽd like a range report on the Montado.
How does it shoot? How does it feel to shoot? Function? Finish?
I like the appearance of short barreled single actions. ;)

so far ive fired exactly one round though it so i cant say on the shooting but ive got to say its the tightest fit up out of the box ruger ive seen. No endplay at all and very very little side to side play. Im heading to camp for a couple days in the morning so i should have a range report when i get back. Little bugger sure feels good in the hand though.

yes, its the 454.  I just got it on Thursday.  I couldn't help myself.  The trigger is heavier than crap but I couldn't live without it so it came home with me.  You finally got the lever gun back!  I'll try to get out there Thursday after work.

Back in May I wrote this:

The Montado has had three trips to the range, been on a few hikes and a fly fishing trip and I am still very pleased with my purchase.

The details:
I've tried several loads and the early favorites are a 255gr SWC and a 250gr RNFP (Lee mold).  The two powders that seem to do the best are SR4756 (Speer #13) and AA#5 (Accurate Powder), both at published  Max (for Colt and replicas) levels.

The 255gr SWC over SR4756 averages 827 fps and will group under 3" at 25 yards, off hand, throwing out the (called) flier.  At 25' it will put them in an enlarged hole.  This load prints about 3" low for me at 25 yards and about 1" at 25'.   I get a clean burn with a little bit of sooting on the forward third of the case.

The 250gr over AA#5 averages 823 fps and will group similarly to the SR4556 load.  It burns slightly less sooty.

The other powders I tried were W231 and SR7625.  Both showed promising accuracy but produced more soot.

The velocity is very nearly equal to the velocities I get in my 4-5/8" Ruger Blackhawk

Shooting the Montado at these levels is comfortable.  I noticed the recoil being different but not punishing compared to my bigger gripped Ruger Blackhawk.  It took me a few cylinders worth to adjust to the smaller grip.  The shorter barrel amplifies any deficiencies in  one's technique.  Getting the repetitions with each trip to the range has brought improvement.

The sights are easy to see and align.  The shots center (low) on the bullseye.  Once I settle on a load I'll get file the front sight if needed to bring the POA = POI.

The Montado point shoots very well too.  Focusing on the target without using the sights and firing at a steady rate at 25' it was easy to keep a cylinder's worth centered on the bull in a 4" group.

Shooting one handed is where the Montado outshines the Blackhawk.  The smaller grip and Super Blackhawk style hammer make firing and re-cocking easier and faster.

In the field it is a pleasure to carry even though the holster I'm currently using fits my 4-5/8" Blackhawk better.  I have a holster for the Montado on order but it looks like I'll have a month or so wait before it is made.  I wear it crossdraw and I rarely notice it when hiking, fishing or while driving.  It conceals well under an untucked shirt.

I still have more testing to do but so far I really like it.
----------------------------

Since then it has been my regular carry piece and rides around comfortably and securely in a Mernickle holster I had made for it.  The more I shoot it the better I'm able to do.  Accuracy is slightly better than my Blackhawk.  I've also shot a cylinder's worth of 300 grain cast bullets (load estimated to be around 20,000psi and clocked 905 fps) .  The charge was outside the typical Colt Clone limitations.  It showed promising accuracy but it was a handful with the smaller grip but not too bad....

great write up! You hit on one of the things that I really liked about it that i guess i just didnt pay attention to. Ive never had a gun that my thumb goes so naturaly to the hammer on. Ive shot the other small framed new rugers and thought just the opposite. As a matter of fact thats why i never bought one. The reach to the hammer was unnatural and when using the left thumb to cock them for speed shooting i allways pinched the web of my right hand between the frame and that LONG hammer. Plus in my opinion that hammer was just dog ugly! Ruger would be smart to switch over totaly to this hammer design for the whole line. Now if we could just get them to chamber them in 4440 and 44 specail and put this hammer on them id buy a 4 5/8s in each caliber.
IŽd like a range report on the Montado.

I haven't filed my front sight on the Montado and may not have to.  I stumbled onto a load that seams to shoot very close to Point of Aim (without filing) is 10.5 of SR4756 under a 255gr cast bullet.  This load it 0.5 grain OVER the Speer #13 published MAX.  The load averages 878 fps out of my Montado and 904 out of my 5.5" New Vaquero.  It is very accurate in both.

I ran a cylinder's worth through the chronograph and noticed the point of impact was higher than I expected.  Took a shot at a can using my normal sight picture (with a little extra post showing) and shot over it.  Next shot I squared the post with the top of the rear sight, aimed directly at the can and made a solid hit.  I decided to test in on paper but only had three shots left.  I held right on and all three impacted at the point of aim or just slightly low which is better than 3" low ...  I've loaded up some more and next time I'll be able to say for sure.

Another note about the Mernickle Holster I'm using is that despite its minimal size it holds very securely.  I've had it on while running and it held firm. No problem while crawling through Salmon Berry thickets over/under windfalls either.  Great little packing gun.

well the gun will shoot. It is a finiky bugger though. Most groups going 2-3 inch at 25 yards. Ive tried the rcbs 255swc, Lbt 265 swc lyman 255swcgc lyman 270 FA tngc rcbs 270saa and the lbt 280 wfn. All with herco power pistol unigue universal clays reddot and 2400 loading for between 800 and a 1000 fps with all of them and like i said most groups hover around two inch the one stand out is herco and the rcbs 255 swc. It will shot into an inch if i do my part and its about the only bullet out of it that will consistantly shoot under 2 inch with most powders.  Funny thing is that it was the first load i tried in the gun. My 25 mountain gun liked that load too. Problem is that rcbs in there infinate wisdom changed that mold slightly and the new one isnt near the bullet the old one is. Sure wish i could find one or two more of those molds. After getting the action done ive got to say that its one of the most fun out of the box rugers ive ever owned. Even my 4 5/8s super is taking a back seat to this one. Sure wish ruger would see to chamber it in 44 special and 4440 and 3840 for the cowboy shooters as id like to have one of each. Preferable blued. Only two things this gun needs to be perfect in my opinion. A better base pin like a belt mountain sheriffs pin as the one in it has such a tiny head that my club fingers dont get ahold of it well and a drift front sight as ive got the sight blade leaning a tad. Nice to see ruger making something that worked out of the box. The chambers are right and its got a good barrel. Im well over a 1000 rounds through it now and theres not a lick of leading in the barrel. Have to say this ones a keeper.

Never mind, I looked at Rugers web site, it looks just like my 45 Vaquerito, except mine has windage front sight and pretty set of walnut grips. I was hoping for a redo of Elmer Keith's #5 Croft 44 spec. Oh well.
