In flight

Just above the smoke is an orange painted golf ball.

Jeeper 1,  Nice picture.  I have a 1/2 scale coehorn mortar coming any day now and have never fired anything black powder powered before.  Can you explain to me how you load your mortar and what is the best measuring device of black powder.  I have already purchased some skirmish grade Schutzen powder and 50 feet of fuse.  I do not have any idea how to measure grains or how many to start with.  I plan on shooting blanks and the occasional golf ball.  Thanks for your help.

M223, I'm only using the cannon grade to get rid of it. Once it's gone I'll use 3F goex. 100 grains of 3F essentially duplicates the cannon grade load.

Spuddy, I use an adjustable powder measure and a powder scale. I use the scale to set the measure. I store the pre-measured charges in the translucent white film cans that are labeled as to what is inside. When I am out shooting I just pour the powder through a small automatic transmission funnel directly into the powder chamber.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

I do not have any idea how to measure grains or how many to start with.

Grains are a very small unit of weight (there are 7000 grains in a common pound) commonly used in weighing gunpowder.  For something like a half scale Coehorn, I would start with around 100 grains of Fg black powder up to a max of 220 grains.  For practical purposes, 100 grains is 1/4 of an ounce (an ounce is actually 437.5 grains so 100 grains is actually .228 ounces.)

There is no way of getting around the need for a scale to measure powder or calibrate volumetric measures.  These days you can get an electronic scale relatively cheaply.  Take a look at Topline for starters.  Their low capacity scales will measure in grams, grains and maybe ounces.

I have the Topline TS-50-2 (the 100 gram upgrade version of the AWS-50-2)
http://www.toplinedigitalscales.com/catalog.php?action=124&item_id=382

It has .2 grain accuracy (not good enough for cartrige gun reloading but perfect for cannons/mortars) and a 3.5 ounce capacity

current price is $50 with free shipping and calibration weight included.

It runs on batterys and has a backlighted display. I love the thing.

Also, check ebay... it is loaded with similar scales - usually for better prices.

an added note about the Topline scales mentioned....

They will measure in ounces, grams, carrots (if you need to measure your diamonds) and grains. You set it to the unit of measure that you are interested in, and it reads out in that unit direct so you don't have to do any mental math to convert.
