First 'Chuck Hunt with .22 Hornet
« on: June 21, 2007, 07:13:10 AM »
I finally find a little time to pursue my favorite sport:  woodchuck hunting!  I went to my favorite farm after work with the Mannlicher-stocked Topper that I picked up earlier this year. I managed to find an old Weaver V-8 scope (it has external adjustments) for it and it looks and shoots fine.  Using Lil'Gun powder and Hornady 40 grain V-Max bullets, I shot 4 'chucks.  The closest shot was 25 yards from standing, the farthest 150 yards sitting with shooting stocks for a rest.  It looks like this little gun will be my walking rifle this year.

The hornet is a fun gun. Those 40v-max do a number on chucks,I used to walk around and shoot them offhand with mine, good practice.

woodchukhntr - How much does your rig weigh? I am after a light weight walking gun and thinking really seriously about the 22 Hornet. I was thinking about a super lite barrel. I think the older Toppers were not as heavy as the new ones (regular barrel). I used to have a 157 in 22 Hornet and I can not remember how much it weighed. ??? I do not remember it being very heavy.

I have a superlight and it is a joy to haul around, and plenty accurate for the task it is asked to do.

LaOtto,

It does seem lighter than a Handi, but I haven't weighed it.  I'll have to do that and get back to you.

How about one like this?  It is 6.25 pounds as you see it and is in 30 Carbine.  I have a nice .22 barrel blank and was thinking of doing one up as a Hornet.  Larry

Me to..... ;)

I popped four this evening with my Hornet and 40 grain V Max's  :D

Except I shot them all from standing using big round hay bails as a rest.  Furthest was a solid 180 paces on a big fatty.

My load is 2825-2850 fps.  I wouldn't say the 40 grain v max "tears em up".  It punches a hole through them expands pretty good at close range leaving a good sized exit often.  On the 180 chuck tonight, stretching things the exit hole was just slightly larger than the bullet.  They do about the same as the 35 v max.

I would post some pics but I don't they they want that here.

Instead of posting pics, post links to the pics, that way readers have the option of viewing graphic pics. ;)

Last evenings "ditto / 4 chucks with 40 grain v max load" woodchuck hunt with the Handi 22 Hornet

All shots taken from standing using round hay bails as a rest.

The young'ins just came out.  This one was on all fours at 138 paces.

For those interested in ballistics, load bullet performance.............a closer view.  40 grain v max at approximately 2825-2850 fps w) 12.8 grains lil gun & federal SRP
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Bill1227/IMG_1753.jpg

Here is the "fatty" I took at 180 paces.  The bullet passed through, exiting a bit larger than the diameter but with considerable less expansion, fragmenting than the 138 pace shot.

Shot the fatty from the hay bail up there in the sun

Reloaded some the other night.  Checked my poi / group size on my home 50 yard range.  This is the first and only 5 fired from the cold and clean barrel.  First shot is noted (hunter, don't ya know........like to note that first one  ;)) next four followed.  Group in upper .3's  Note: "50 yards" off bags, 12 power scope.  50 yards "yes" but still pretty darn good.  Really feel after that first cold & clean shot I could have put 10 in the .5's  But,  it's woodchuck hunting time here now..........not paper punching time  ;D  Loaded with a Lee Classic loader (20 bucks) and a mallet (had it)

Handi Hornet at it's home.  Sitting on sticks in a woodchuck hay field

PS  don't mean to steal your thread fellow woodchuck handi hornet hunter.  Just sharing..........

Nice shootin and thanks for sharing!!

I've been working with Calhoon 30gr bullets in my Hornet, they shot pretty good at just over 3400fps with H110, but it wasn't consistent, have some more loaded up that are crimped with the Lee FCD and others loaded with 13gr of Lil-gun to try. Saw that Berger offers a 30gr .224 bullet with a BC of .193, so I ordered some of them to try out, I'll post the results when I get some decent results. ;)

Let me know if the double hollow points expand / frag better at hornet speed...............although that is faster  :o than normal hornet for sure

I have no doubt they're explosive, they're made for the Hornet, I sectioned one, the entire front third is jacket only!! :o The Bergers are better built, made for .223 , .22-250 and other .224" chamberings,  but will come apart in flight in the 22-250 if the twist rate is faster than 1:14".
