If your going to get into reloading and want to keep it simple  , Reloader #7  and IMR3031 are two very good powder choices that can be used in both the 45-70 and the 223 with excellent results.

45-70 hands down. Everyone needs at least two 45-70's-----it's kind of a rule. I know because I only have one and I am itching to get a second!!!!!!!

The .243 ain't fur friendly in the least tho, and forget about seeing impacts, let alone using almost twice as much powder. :'( :o Course, if you don't care about the fur or seeing red mist....

All things considered and if you don't reload then the 223 is the best choice IMO. Ammo is everywhere, its cheap, and out to 300 yards it tough to beat.
shot placement is everything.
