I have both the Leupold FXII and the Nikon Monarch in 4x.  Both are nice and clear, but the Nikon is brighter.  It has a 44mm objective and the Leupold is 33mm.

I like the Meopta Artemis 2000 6x42 for about $315.  I believe the new Leupold FX III 6x42 are about $70 more.  Those would be my top two in that range.  If trying to decide between 4x and 6x pehaps look into Weaver's 4.75x40 Grand Slam for around $250.

akpls - you have a Monarch 4x with a 44mm objective?  Is that a typo - I have only seen them in 4x40.  both Nikon and Sightron sell 6x42's that are very good by all accounts in the $225 range.

Establish your eye relief needs and look from there. If you are mounting the scope on say a 7mm-08, 3.5" would be plenty for me. If it was for say a light weight 30-06 or standard weight 7mm or 300 mag I'd want more eye relief.

In no particular order....

Sightron compact 4x32 SII--I have one and it is a great little scope

Sightron SII 6x42

Weaver K4 and K6--probably can't be beat for price and value

Weaver Grand Slam 4.75x40--for the person that can't decide between 4x or 6x (ME!!) I have one of these too, and it is excellent.

Nikon Monarch 4x40 and 6x42

Leupold FX 4x33 and 6x42--if you like them, I think they are overpriced and over-rated, but they are an American company.

Just my $.02....I have two Leupold M8 6x42mm that as far as I'm concerned can't be beaten for the price. Great light transmission! I think the m8s are the best bang for the buck. Ebay has them ALMOST all the time...you should be able to grab one for under $200! I know I have.........Ken

$500 for a fixed scope?  For that amount of money, you can get a VERY GOOD VARIABLE SCOPE!  Zeiss Conquest, Nikon Monarchs, Elite 4200s, even Leupold VX-IIIs.

Still, if your heart is content on a fixed scope AT OR CLOSE TO THAT PRICE RANGE, then it would be hard to beat a Leupold FXIII.

Zachary, some of us (few I know) just prefer a fixed power scope. There are advantages like the same view all the time. Nothing like trying a close moving target with the scope set on 9x. Anyway, For my money the 4x is neither fish nor fowl. I like the leupold M8 3x if you can find one or the current 2&1/2 x if not. For more open country give me a good 6x scope and I'm happy. Hard to beat the Leupold 6x when you consider weight, optics, etc.

If money is a concern the weaver or swift scopes will work.  ;D Regards, Byron

The M8 series scopes are awsome.  i think that the M8 series scopes are history.  They are now called FXI, FXII, etc.  The best Leupold 6X42 scope is now called the FXIII.  These are superior scopes.  Got one on my .30-06 Encore barrel.  Use it for hog hunting at night.   It is even better in the dark than my Zeiss 6X42.  i'm going to get another one.

I'll add the Nikon Buckmasters 4x40 to my list too.  It's a bit long, but I like it a lot.

Alsagr, which retucle do you have on your leupold 6x42. I have been considering one but can't choose. Byron

I just received my Nikon Monarch 4x fixed power from SWFA (they are closing out the Monarchs and have some GREAT deals right now).  I am pretty impressed with it.   I am going to buy another one just to have for any other hunting rifle I may get in the future, because for under 200 bucks shipped to my door, it is one helluva scope, with a lifetime warranty.

This year Zeiss added a 4x32 to the Conquest line.......it is probably the best fixed power scope availlable for under $500.  I haven't personally seen one, but I have handled several of the Conquest variables and they are first class all the way.  Retail on the 4x is around the $450 area.

Another vote for the Weaver K4 or K6.  I have a number of more expensive variables and the optics on my fixed Weavers are better than any other scope I own.  In addition, the eye relief on the Weavers are much better than anything else in their price range from what I have found.

I have purchased more fixed Weavers in the past ten years than all other brands/types combined.  Gave my DAd a WEaver K6 for one of his rifles and he agrees with me.

Good luck whatever you choose.

I have a Weaver K6 (1970's era) that is available.  It is in great shape, but no box.

I happen to be one of those people who like fixed powered scopes,I have a Leopold M8 4x that is a great scope that.I also have a burris fullfeild in 4x that was given to me that is a great that I have currently mounted on a Mossberg ATR 100 in 270 that has been a great gun-scope combo that has killed 6 deer and 2 caribou over the last 2 years.I have not ever owned one but I do know 2 differnt guys that have several of the old weaver K series of scope that have seen 30+ years of hard use that have never let them down

Interesting, I've kept my 30+ year old K4 around to show people how the optics have improved over the years. The glass on it has turned yellow and the glue holding some of the lenses together is seperating.

Ahab, like I said before I never owned a weaver K series scope myself, but everyone I have seen that was still in use seemed to be a decent scope for the age of it.I would never suggest that someone put one of these old scopes on a rifle to go on a once in a lifetime hunt. But there are alot of the old steel tube weavers still in use
