Barnes varmint grenade recipes for a hornet.
« on: July 19, 2007, 05:56:33 PM »
I just picked up a box of Barnes 36 varmint grenade bullets and was going to try them in my hornet. Anyone have any recipes? My favorite load so far in my hornet is Lil Gun with a 35 grain Vmax.  The bullet is very long for its weight, it is slightly longer than a hornady  52 grain bthp match bullet. An dissected it appears to be about 3/4 full of a tin looking metal. While were at it does anyone know of load data for it in a 220 swift also.

Best bet is to call Barnes at 800-574-9200 or email Ty Herring at tyh@barnesbullets.com for load data, if you email him, he'll send you the data promptly if they have it, or make recommendations based on the #3 manual, probably for the 40gr VLC. Hodgdon's max load for lil'gun with any bullet except the Barnes 52gr XFB in the Hornet is 13gr!!

I was thinking on the 13 grains of Lil gun, and have loaded a few of these .01 off the lands. Will try them and let you know the results. I wouldn't load any other max load with data from another similar weight bullet, being this bullet has a very long bearing surface, but with the low pressure generated in  the test loads with Lil Gun. I feel there is some safety room. I emailed barnes for data on this in several calibers and will post it when  I get it.
