Bullet for .41 Magnu 1894FG
« on: June 23, 2007, 10:24:34 AM »
Howdy,
Ma gave me an 1894FG for my birthday last week and I intend to use it here in Indiana for deer. I installed a Weaver V-3 1-3x20 scope and sighted it in this afternoon.
Starting out with some Sierra 210gr JHC over Unique, I thought I was losing my marbles. the shots were barely staying on the paper at 25 yards. I KNEW I'd cranked down on the mounting screws until I was sure something would break. I used Loctite.
I switched to 170gr Sierra ammo and the group tightened down to under two inches offhand. I plinked apples from fifty yards with them.
I was planning to go heavy. Maybe try some 250-grain LBT's. Now? Is anyone having luck with heavy bullets in the .41?

I have a 1894LTD ss with a 16.25 inch barrel. Of the 2 boxes of factory ammo I shot the 170's were more accurate then the 210. I reload the Hornady 210 grn xtp with LIL GUN powder. This gives me better accuracy and velocity then 2400 or H110. 20.5 grns gives me over 1700 FPS. I have gone higher. There is data on the Hodgdon web site. My rifle has about 300 to 350 rounds thru it, and now is a pretty good shooter. The first few range trips with the rifle left me kind of dissappointed with it's accuracy. I have been meaning to try the FED cast core load but havn't as of now. Good luck.

quite some time ago I posted some results using a variety of bullets from 210 to 250 jacketed in the 41 - both revolver and FG.  I wish I could have more time to follow up on the loads but haven't managed it.  You might try a search for my post.  I had pictures of some of my targets.   I'm guessing your 210 sierras might have been loaded a little light.  I would expect you to get good accuracy from them - try a hotter load with 4227, 2400 or H110. Oh and the guy who makes jacketed 250 gr bullets, sells them on Ebay these days.  Or find his post in the GB New Products forum.  I think they worked pretty well for me.  I want to experiment more.  I'm hoping soon to put a Leupold 3x on my Marlin and get to workiing.  My gun feeds 265 and 250 gr Corbons fine, also Federal 250 cast core fine and 265 Buffalo bore fine too.   I think my gun really liked the Speer 210 gold dots.  But try to find my post - my memory is poor.

Good luck.  I really like my Marlin.

Howdy,
Tomorrow I plan to try some heavy bullets loaded with max loads of Blue Dot. The 10.5 grains of Unique might not have been pushing the bullets fast enough. I checked the Marlin spec's and the rifling twist should be fast enough to stabilize a 210. I'll give it another try.
Geez... I can't believe I ran out of 2400. Not going to let THAT happen again.
