Getting a nice shine on antlers
« on: May 01, 2006, 09:27:12 AM »
What is the current method for getting a nice natural shine on antlers.
My taxidermist who does it part time and is a good friend of mine used to use Johnson Wax's original formula which I guess is not produced anymore.

at the crocery store in the cleaning section you will find old english scrath cover. they make it in dark and light wood. the light wood works great for antlers that are not faded and the dark wood will stain faded antlers back to a nice natural color. simply put on a rag and wipe on.

Linseed oil and turpentine 50/50 mixture. Takes a couple of hours to absorb in and not be sticky.  :D

It sure would, it is what my taxidermist uses on all his horns.  :D

Never used any sort of shine or gloss on my antlers.  Because last time I checked, the deer didn't have it on em when I got him!

I guess the topic should have been " a natural shine".

Like I said in my first post. Linseed oil and turpentine 50/50 mixture. Dries to a low luster and shine, looks very natural. All my horned and antler mounts had it on them.

I use the Old English (OE) also.  The light works well to refresh antlers and give a little shine.  The dark works well on weathered/bleached antlers to get the color back.  This week I have a set that I am going to use OE 50/50 mix on.  Start light and work your way up (mix) to what you think looks natural.  Every set is different.
