.270 Win. OK for Gemsbok?
« on: May 20, 2003, 10:01:32 AM »
Assuming that I'm using good bullets, like Nosler Partitions or the like, is the .270 adequate for Gemsbok?

A friend of mine, kill a Gemsbok with a 270, with 130 grain factory ammo. It had 36 in. horns and killed it at 125 yards. He said it drop in it tracks.

The .270 is adequate with proper shot placement and if you use good quality bullets designed for good penetration. Some of these beasties can be rather large.

I'd say yes, with the caveat that you use good strong bullets and be very careful with your shot placement.  My wife killed a great big cow (6" taller than the 34" bull she was with) using her .257 Roberts and 120 grain Hornady Interlocks.  It's all about where you put the bullet.  I had good luck shooting mine with a 180 grain Partition from a .330 Win Mag, and a buddy of mine shot his with the same bullet from a .30-06.  I wouldn't try to stretch the range too much with that .270 though...

Good luck with your hunt.  They are amazing animals to hunt, plus they're darn tasty!

The late great Jack O'Conner wrote about  hunting African anteope, inlucing the gemsbock, extensively with the .270 WCF.  He favored the 150 grain Nosler Partition with H-4831 powerd.
