45-70 load data

Ok, I got a new 16" barrel and I see that load data are all over the place. What data do I use? Trapdoor, Marlin? My New 6th edition Hornady has some data specifically for the Contender but it is very limited. Anybody have any  experience and advice?. Any pet loads-ballistic info would be very welcome. Thanks!

From what I understand, and I am no expert, but with the contender you should stay with the trapdoor loads.  I loaded for an Encore, and with it you can use what ever data you choose upto Ruger#1, but they do get painful.  Save your wrist and your gun, stick with trapdoor loads.

FOXCALLER: T/C LOAD BOOK ( 2nd Ed) Has load data that I've used in my 45/70 Contender.  As per LOAD BOOK,  trim cases to 2.095.  The load I shoot in mine is 42.9 gr of IMR4198 using 300gr JHP.  That load according to the book is supposed to be about 1750 fps with 16 1/4 Bbl.  The load for IMR4198 starts at 36.0 with max load 45.9.   My Contender Bbl has a muzzle break, which causes the pistol to COME STRAIGHT BACK IN YOUR HAND.  Recoil is quite severe, much better to shoot with shoulder stock.  Another thing if you shoot it as a pistol, watch your fingers of your bracing hand around the trigger guard spur, as it will BITE.  Lots of fun too shoot, after you get used to the recoil.  Good Luck Ken.
